Home/Renter's Insurance once married

JRA12216, on October 28, 2016 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Currently I have renter's insurance because my fiance owns the house, not me. I was told renter's insurance is a good idea because even though we are a couple, his homeowner's insurance wouldn't cover anything of mine in the event of a disaster, theft, etc. So I went and got my own insurance. I have my e-ring under my own policy. My question is, once we are married, do I still need renter's insurance or would I then be covered under his homeowner's insurance?

Once you are married you would be covered under his home owner's insurance. I was always under the impression that anyone's belongings are covered under the home owner's insurance as long as the home owner can prove the items were there in the event of the claim. Its hard to prove who things belong to...

These things may vary by state, though.

Can't you just ask his insurance broker?

Anyone's belongings are covered, assuming the person wants them to be. When I had roommates, the issue with why they want you to be on separate plans (besides the company wanting the money) is that say your roommate's stuff is damaged and the policy is in your name then on your history you'll have that you filed a claim (even tho your belongings were fine). But if your fiancé had enough coverage or got extra coverage he could add you unmarried.

I've never heard of that, but super proactive! Since it's his house & you aren't a "tenant", pretty sure your belongings are covered. Ask him to add you to the policy now, rather than paying for renters insurance. I used Jewelers Mutual to insure my e-ring (& bands) - I'm in your situation, also - I moved into his place about 7 years ago. Check with your insurance broker - & side note: Jewelers Mutual was WAY cheaper than covered the ring under home owners policy - homeowners wanted average $3 per $100 of appraised value and jewelers mutual was about $2 (I think?) so I saved a few hundred bucks - and they specialize in insuring jewelry & it's super simple!

Thanks everyone, yea I think the smartest route is to get in touch with his insurance broker for all the details. I posted on here while the thought was fresh in my mind to see if anyone else had a similar scenario. I things probably vary state to state as well, we live in MA.

I got one after I met with a rep that visits my office on a regular basis. It was after I got engaged and I was looking into getting event insurance for the wedding, and also get my ring insured. Maybe I would have been better off looking into FH homeowner's insurance. He is the WORST procrastinator, and I am not yet on his policy so I took it into my own hands to make sure I am covered. I am sure he needs to make the initial call to get me added, that should be fun trying to motivate him to do it haha.

Not sure about the renters insurance thing, since we bought our house together. But you should both be put on the mortgage and homeowners insurance once you are married. However, you might still need a separate policy for your engagement ring - I have a personal articles policy for mine, because homeowners only covers like up to $1,500 or $2,000 in jewelry total which would not cover my e-ring and definitely not my e-ring plus other jewelry I own.

Hi there! I think you may contact your insurance company or consult a public adjuster to know the exact information about insurance. There is a website which gives you information about the renters insurance and home insurance policy. An experienced professional may let you know the exact information, whether renters insurance is still required for dealing with the home damage or your wife's home insurance is still enough to deal with the damage.
