Home Improvements instead of gifts?

Shannon, on June 8, 2012 at 4:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 4

I know this has been asked, but I can't find anything recent. My fiance and I have lived together for several years and we bought a house in 2010 that needs improvements. We originally registered at Macy's (didn't tell anyone yet) but we realized we would LOVE to get gift cards for home depot or something (I heard their registry sucks) because those things are definitely more urgent than blenders and towels.

I would never ASK for cash or gift cards or "paper gifts." I was thinking of removing most or all of our Macy's registry stuff, but is THAT rude? Like not having a registry for people who would prefer to not give cash/cards? If you have no registry and mention the home depot thing to certain people, will that be enough or will you end up with a bunch of duplicate items for the home?

Home Depot has a registry ( I hear its a bit tedious) or you could use registry365.com to add gift cards to Home Depots, Lowes, add tools from Sears. How neat would it be to go to Home Depot and register for wall outlets, door knobs, a nail gun and a miter saw??? If people click on your registry and see that its all home improvement related and you put in a brief blurb about fixing up your house before you dress it up people may opt to give you cash (or the stuff you registered for).

Also spread the word that to family and bridal party that home improvements are what you really want. Maybe throw a bridal shower with a home improvement theme? That's the limit to my craftiness I don't know what that theme would look like exactly.

Ooh I like the "fix it up before you dress it up" thing! Thanks!

We actually just added an option to get us Home Depot Gift Cards on our registry. Smiley smile On our wedding website under registry (www.weddingwire.com/kielandcydney) you can click the Home Depot logo and it will take you to a place where they can purchase GC. Smiley smile

Also, there are plenty of registries now that allow you to register for different items.

UponOurStar is a registry which allows you to register for 'home improvement' items or projects you want to do for your home. It allows guests to decide where they want to invest their 'cash gift' on your registry...but in the end, you get the cash in general to do with it what you want. Here's an example of a "new home" registry.

OurWishingWell is pretty much the same thing and it looks like you can access the money before the wedding.

Wedding wire has a registry called the honeyfund and they actually have a registry specifically for monetary gifts towards home improvements.
