Home improvement gift cards for shower?

Megan, on January 24, 2019 at 2:42 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
Hello, my fiancé and I are getting married July 2019. My mother and MIL are planning my shower and so it begins... where do I register?!
We have lived together for 5 years, we own our home and everything in it. That being said, we don’t need anything. However, we do have many home improvement projects in mind. Is it disrespectful to ask my guests to support this?

In my opinion, if you invite someone to a shower they want to bring gifts and not cash. We bought a home in July 2018 and have an Amazon registry. It has a ton of home improvement things & tools we can use for specific projects.

I dont think its rude. You could register for hardware (faucets, door knobs etc) or just gift cards! You could even suggest to the moms that a home improvement themed bridal shower?

No, that’s not rude at all. You need what you need.

My FMIL and mom are throwing me a "purse shower" to basically tell people we would prefer cash over gifts without having to actually say it. For the wedding we are going to register for a few small things for those old school guests who insist on bringing an actual gift but I'm with you, my house needs work not more stuff. Smiley smile

A shower is specifically for physical gifts so I don't think this is a good idea. You could definitely make it a home improvement shower and make a specific registry for tools etc. Otherwise I'd just go with a recipe or stock the bar type shower if you really want a shower but not receive housewares. If you don't want to receive physical items of any kind, don't have a shower, you could have a bridal luncheon or something instead with no gifts

You can register at places like Home Depot and Lowes. I think asking for cash or gift cards at a shower is tacky - the point is to get physical gift. Amazon also has lots of hardware store type things - tools, etc.

I think it depends on your family. A shower is usually to 'shower' the bride with gifts, and I did register for a few traditional items for a couple of people. But my family is a little different. At any bridal shower the bride tells whomever is throwing the shower where they want giftcards to as well as registers for a bunch of $10 or less items at BBB or something. Then at the shower, the giftcards are wrapped in weird spatulas or other similar item. This has been tradition in my family since forever, so it wasn't weird when everyone asked what gift cards. If your family is less traditional they may like this idea but I do know that it is never required.... everyone just does it. (My shower is also a pizza and beer shower.... so if you are looking for the more traditional tea and fancypants shower.... I'm not the one to go to for advice)

LOL! I'm so dense, I would be wracking my brain trying to come up with gifts that fit in a purse (or I'd buy a purse/tote...). I'd probably be searching for a pretty compact or make-up bag.... (Also, just my personal opinion, but not a fan of a cash shower.)

I dont want it honestly...but the moms are not budging...they dont ask for much so I'm trying to pick my battles and since I dont have to plan it, I'm not going to worry about it.

We did Bed, Bath, and Beyond for upgrades like flat wear, place settings, towels, bridal/wedding necessities, etc. Then we did Menards, and the only thing I listed on the registery is gift cards. Like you, I would love to do our kitchen countertops, sink, and backsplash!
