Holy dress shopping anxiety!!

Virginia, on June 25, 2019 at 9:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
So I’m the girl who goes clothes shopping....doesn’t buy anything....and leaves the malls in tears wishing I were someone else. I am so afraid that this will also be my dress shopping experience. I’m also scared that I won’t “know” which dress is “the one” because I am so indecisive. Everyone swears that part of my brain doesn’t work and I agree....they’re probably right. Anyone else like me and had a surprisingly wonderful experience? I am freaking out...my appt is on Sunday.

Im also SUPER indecisive. Just to help you understand better, let me explain...

I couldn't decide on which envelope seals to buy for invites, so my Maid and Matron of honor (from here on out I will be referring to them as MM) had to choose for me.

I purchased 3 pairs of shoes for wedding day.

I have bought TWELVE veils before I found the one. MMs had to make the final decision on which veil. (I am being dead serious, yes, 12).

I have lost count of how much wedding jewelry Ive bought. I just got my bridal portraits back and I hate my necklace.

I also dislike 49 of the 53 bridal portraits I just got back.

I have changed my wedding day hairstyle twice.

I have bought now 3 different sets of very nice artificial flowers before finally finding the flowers I wanted in my centerpieces.

My MMs also had to make the final decision on which invitations... they are also the ones who decided on my jewelry.

My FH took over catering and music because I simply couldn't make any decisions, and when Id show him what I came up with he would feel overwhelmed, so I just handed those tasks over to him. And he happily accepted because no more had to hear my million options Id found.

I thought I wanted a corset back in my dress, so I had my seamstress put one in, I loved it, then I changed my mind and gave schedule to have the zipper put back in.

One time I wanted to get a new pair of cute tennis shoes for work... and I couldn't decide on a pair, so I bought 4... yes, FOUR pair of work shoes.

I could go on, but I won't bore you. The point of all that is when you find the right dress, THE ONE, you will definitely know. It took me 7 trips to look for my dress but when I found it, I knew. There was 0 doubt in my mind. Im sure you'll be the same! Good luck

I’m pretty indecisive too but more just afraid to commit sometimes because I fear I might be making the wrong choice. I went dress shopping 3 days in a row and was so frustrated. I tried on my dress (last dress at the last shop) loved it but still wasn’t sure. Put on another dress I had liked and knew immediately the other one was my dress. I put it back on and still loved it. My best advice is don’t settle! There were a lot of dresses that had elements I liked and my family loved but deep down there were things I would change about them. I thought maybe it was because I couldn’t make up my mind but really it’s because they weren’t my dress. You will know...picture yourself walking down the aisle in the dress. If it doesn’t make you smile, it’s not the one!

Sounds just like me! I absolutely dread going and trying on clothes because nothing ever looks right on me and I just end up getting frustrated and upset. I for sure though that I was gonna be miserable trying on dresses but surprisingly there wasn’t one dress that I tried on that looked absolutely horrible to the point I got upset, for once in my life I actually liked everything I tried on and ended up being such a fun experience, i kinda wanna go try on more! Lol I hope it’s the same for you.

I'm generally pretty indecisive, but I'm picky enough about clothes that if I don't really like something, I won't buy it. The first shop I went into was more hands-off, and she wanted me to pick dresses (which were all individually bagged and hard to see how they actually looked) - it didn't go super well. The second shop I went to invited me to look around and grab anything I wanted to try, but my consultant also did a lap and pulled around a dozen dresses for me based on what aspects of dresses I told her I liked.

She had (in my opinion) the best and simplest advice for trying on dresses and determining the winner: try on the first dress and see how it looks and feels, and then try on the second and do the same. Then compare them. The winner stays in the dressing room to be compared to the next dress, and the loser goes back to the racks. If you don't like one dress more than another, you probably shouldn't buy it. And if there are certain parts of a dress you like or don't like, point them out to your consultant so they can get a better handle on your preferences.

And most importantly, just have fun! Good luck!

    Yes--me!

I hate clothes shopping. Like you, I am often the one at the mall, leaving in tears after trying on a bunch of stuff that looks horrible! So, I was very apprehensive. I assumed that every dress I tried on would make me look like a fat cow, and I'd never find the "one."

Surprisingly, it went very different. First, I feel like I got really lucky with my bridal consultant. I went to David's Bridal, had an appointment. I had no idea which consultant we were going to get, but we got Julian, the BEST BRIDAL CONSULTANT EVER!! He turned out to be the sweetest guy, who listened very carefully to my concerns, and assured me that this was going to be a different sort of shopping experience for me. Boy was he right!! First, he treated me like a princess the entire time, telling me how beautiful I was, and encouraging me every step of the way. Next, he pulled up the DB website and asked me to show him the styles I liked best. I had already created a favorites list ahead of time. He pulled all of those for me to try. I told him which one was my absolute favorite from the website, so he saved that one for last. He was just so sweet the whole time, and acted like I was the only bride in the world and he was there to serve me. It was a lovely experience.

Turns out, he's got an eye for this!! That last dress was the one!!

So, even though you may not be able to choose your bridal consultant, if you end up shopping more than once, try to get someone like that, who does everything they can to make you feel beautiful.

Also, don't take anyone with you who is a debby downer, or isn't willing to build you up during the experience. Take only your most supportive friends/family with you. It makes a difference.
