Hitchswitch? Worth it?

Caitlin, on September 1, 2019 at 11:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19
Have any of y'all used HitchSwitch to change your name? Is it legit? Is it worth it?

Didnt use it but I've heard all it basically does is compile the forms you'll need to fill out. I found the forms pretty easily on my own and kept my info private and didnt have to pay for somebody to do the simple task.

I paid for the cheapest version of it and haven't done the paperwork yet so I'll have to get back with you after I change my name. I'm kind of regretting getting it now though!

In essence, it charges you a fee for something you can do yourself. They provide you the forms that are freely available online, and when you pay more, they'll just pre-fill your name and send you the envelopes. You still have to do most of the work. I don't know if the 5 minutes you save by not having to download and print a form is worth the money.

Don't pay anyone to do anything. It is not that hard, just a bit time consuming. Frankly I would be afraid of identity theft and I am not a paranoid person. Waiting in line at the DMV was not that bad really.

The worst part if changing your name is after the legal part, updating all your info everywhere. Banks, utilities, Dr office, insurance....

So just to be clear, because I was confused about this too, is you basically just go to the DMV to make it a legal change - then follow up with all of your services like Selena said??

It depends on what state you are getting married in, as some states do not allow you to change your name when you apply for a license. In my state, it says "name before marriage" and "name after marriage" so when you get that license back in about ten days, you bring that (with the raised seal) everywhere as people need to that document. Now, some states you do not apply to change your name when applying for a license, you need to go to court. Either way, you need to get that license with the raised seal from the county or the courts, then you are off to the DMV, the bank, Social Security (I recommend mailing your stuff in) car insurance, credit cards.....yay! I recommend doing DMV and passport first as once you get a government issued photo ID with your new name on it, it gets easier.

In North Carolina you go to the social security office first, then the dmv. I think every state is different

In all states, you can change your name on marriage without going to court. However, some states allow you to state on your marriage license what your name will be after marriage, e.g., your birth name, a hyphenated name, or your husband's last name.

In either event, if you are changing your name, you use your marriage certificate to change your name on your Social Security, then your driver's license, then your passport if you have one. After that, it's just a question of letting everyone else--your employer, banks, credit cards, etc.--know.

None of these services really helps a whole lot. You've still got to go in person to the Social Security office and the motor vehicles office, and you can get their forms from their websites or in their offices. Pretty much everyone else will allow you to change your name by just sending or uploading a copy of your marriage certificate.

Great answers. Also, don’t forget to change your name with IRS. That is a big plus when you start filing a return and your name has change. Your return might get rejected because you haven’t updated your name.

I'be been told by all of my friend's that have gotten married that it's a waste of money (a few of them used it or similar sites and a few didn't). I don't plan to use it and I get married at the end of the month. One of my friends said they charge you money to send you the forms & envelopes for what you need with your name on it, but you still have to fill the rest of it out. Hitch Switch also didn't have all the paper work she needed, so she still had to track down certain banks on her own. She said just make a list of what needs to be changed, and do it yourself. Save yourself the money!

It's really not that hard to change your name, I have done it 3 times! I don't think it's worth paying for.

I didn't use it, but from what I was told by people who have used it is that it's a waste of money. The forms are easy enough to do on your own.
