Hiring two different photographers?

Holly, on July 19, 2018 at 6:19 PM Posted in Planning 1 24

So, here's the back story:

I found a great photographer, loved all the photos, but they were wayyy over what I wanted to spend... I was trying to keep looking feeling like now that I've seen those pictures I won't find ones at lower prices that look like those, but then I found two photographers with two different syles that are much less and just as good!

Here's my question: I like both styles but they are very different, and low enough cost with my budget that could hire both for less than the original photographer I liked. Has anyone hired two separate photographers?

Thanks!!

I don't see why not! As long as they are both okay with working together. It might be really cool to have two, because they could capture different views/angles at totally different styles.

Thanks! I'll have to make sure they wouldn't mind, that's probably the only part that worries me, hopefully not offensive or something. but that's exactly what I thought!

That seems super confusing to me? Who then would be in charge, organize the photos, direct people where to stand, etc.? They would all want a lot of the same key photos? It seems like photos would take a lot longer? Would they get in each other's way throughout the day? Be in each other's photos? This is far different than having 2 shooters where they coordinate with each other. I would much prefer to hire 1 photographer with a second shooter and have one cohesive plan for the day.

Just explain to them both that you love both styles of each and would love to have both of them! The worst that could happen is they say they don't want to work together

I agree this may be hard. If they are okay with it then go for it. But the reason they may have different styles is becuase they pose people differently. So if only one poses people you may not get both styles reflected. But Iif they both pose, pictures might take twice as long. I would just talk to them and see what they think.

Most photographers have in their contract that they/their company will be the only one at an event. I’d definitely check with them to see. Seems like it would be very confusing.

A lot of photographers will want to be the only professionals associated with your wedding. You can certainly ask but I know this has been in every contract I've seen.

Why not just choose 1 & go w/ an extrnded package? Most of those include an assistant (second shooter) & it would honestly be more cost effective. You’d want to get permission w/ 2 photographers..if they don’t work well together it could throw everything off.

Don't get your hopes up. Most photographers will not work with another, independent photographer. Probably for the reasons other posters have specified. It's just too confusing and both will end up PO'ed

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Most likely they wouldn’t allow it and shouldn’t for good reason. They would both be vying for the best shots.

What do you guys think of if they were there for different parts of the wedding? they offer short hour options ( one style for evening/ sunset photos and one style for the day)

Good point. I'm thinking more like one person is photographing in the beginning of the wedding and one in the second half

I would expect this to not go well. My photographer, and every photographer I looked into, had a clause that stated they must be the sole pro photographer for the event. To hire a separate photographer would have been a breach of contract.

What happens if thats the case in your example and the photographer who is supposed to be leaving gets held up and is still there when photographer two shows up. Then you have the chance of breaching both those contracts.

What about videographers? that's not a breach right? butis that because they're not "competing"?

Yes, a videographer is different, though some photographers I spoke to wanted to know if we were using one and who it was if we were.

Imagine if you offered a service for let’s say $100/hr. You get contracted for 6 hours, and at the end of the 6 hours you find out the person who hired you hired someone else for an additional 3 hours. That’s $300 you’re missing out on.

I wouldn't do this. If their styles are so different that you can't choose between them, then it will be apparent in your wedding photos. I would think you would be happier to have your photos all look congruent than to rapidly shift styles halfway through your wedding?

This is a bad idea, and most pros have a clause against this in their contract. Think of your photographer as the traffic director for your day. now imagine your day is a parking lot full of cars, with two traffic directors who have never met, and will likely send traffic in different directions. Not to mention your photos won’t match since their styles are different.

Id recommend hiring one for your wedding and do a sunset couples bridal portrait session on another day with the other.
