Hiring a Hair and Makeup Artist

Did you hire your hair and makeup artist before your trial? If so, how did you know you picked the right person?

I hired my HMUA based on reviews and sample photos before ever doing a trial. My wedding is 2 months away and I haven’t done my trials yet. If I would have waited until I knew what I wanted with my hair and makeup, all of the HMUAs in my area would have been booked.

I booked my makeup artist a couple weeks ago and will be having a trial on the day of my engagement pictures.

Portfolios and reviews are a pretty good way to see if the artist is a good fit. I personally wanted a 'natural-looking but still somewhat glam' style of makeup, and I loved every single one of my MUAs photos. I kept looking at other options and found myself comparing all of them to her and not liking them nearly as much.

I think I might just be super picky with hair and makeup though! Initially, I wanted one person to do both for convenience, but after looking at so many vendors, it was apparent with almost all of them that they excelled at one over the other. Therefore, I decided to go with one MUA, and a separate hair stylist.

Do you know what sort of style of hair and makeup you want?

I picked mine based off reviews and their portfolio. They were also my venues list of preferred vendors.

I hired mine off a friends recommendation and looking at their other reviews. I knew if I didn’t book early I’d have problems finding someone available. I won’t do my trial until a few weeks before the wedding.

I picked based on reviews on THE KNOT and checking Instagram for their work

I hired my HMUA based on reviews and the type of makeup she and her team use. I have extremely sensitive skin and had a difficult time finding someone who used mineral makeup. Once I found her I checked out as many brides photos as possible and loved the way they did makeup and hair and then I booked them.

I asked my hair stylist to do my makeup for my engagement photos, I didn’t know before the trial if it would work out. I did the trial on the day of my engagement shoot but built in plenty of time to redo my makeup if necessary, it turned out beautifully. I’m so glad I took that leap of faith, I’ll absolutely use her the day of the wedding.

I did two trials before booking, I didn't want to book without doing a trial.
