Hiking wedding - anyone done? Have advice?

Handcorinne, on June 15, 2019 at 1:17 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

Hello!

There's a spot that's very significant to me and my partner that you have to hike a ways to get to. We were thinking of doing the ceremony at the spot and then the reception somewhere else. I was wondering if anyone had any advice in general? And also, has anyone done this or know of any good examples? It would be at a waterfall - either on top of the waterfall or below it, and there wouldn't exactly be spots for people to walk "down the isle."

My concern would be if you wanted guest to hike up with you. People with health problems or older people may not be able to do the hike.

Agree with this! I’d make sure your guests are able & willing to hike. Also, what happens if it starts raining for ex. will you have a cover or will you be able to hike with umbrellas?
Alternatively, you can have a small ceremony with those who are ok to hike & then a larger reception with everyone after.

I know a couple who did their ceremony in a local trail that was very special to them. Their parents were able to make it, as they put the ceremony location close to vehicle access spot. It’s possible. They put rocks in a circle for the makeshift alter. Her father walked her down the trail (she wore hiking sandals). Some people won’t make, but people who want to & can will be there.

Awesome! I don't think we will be able to drive up but that's ok. I am glad that people tried and made it work. I'll have to look into hiking sandals. I like the idea of him still walking down the trail with her. Thank you Smiley smile

I think I would just hike with an umbrella. I don't plan on making the ceremony long - just doing it in the significant spot. The ceremony will probably be smaller compared to the reception party - but luckily most people that we want at the ceremony are able and willing.

Yes, of course. But they would be - and we might lose a person or two but we are still interested. We can have a reception elsewhere afterwards. The sport has emotional significance to us so we're trying to see how we can make the ceremony portion significant.

I say go for it, after all the day is about just the two of you. Those who physically can and want to will, the others can enjoy the reception. If you decide not to do the ceremony there for whatever reason you could at least do first look photos there. I can’t wait to see photos, sounds beautiful.

That sounds amazing! I would have loved to do something like this but we would have had to do a destination wedding and our spot of significance (also where we got engaged) is in an absolutely ridiculous location (think driving for 2 hours from the main rd, turns into an atv trail, trail washed out and then hiking 3 miles through sand). I say if it is feasible go for it!
