Higher/Over the Ankle Bustle

Private_User1000, on February 8, 2016 at 10:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

Hello all!

I just purchased my gown over the weekend and now all I can think about is bustling! My question is if anyone has done a higher or over-the-ankle bustle? I really wanted a shorter gown, but I did end up choosing one with a sweep train.

In my head I'm imagining a bustle that hooks underneath the dress to pull up the hemline. Maybe in a sort of scalloped pattern?

Anyway I'd really like to pull my dress up higher off the floor to show off shoes and keep it out of people's way while dancing. Has anyone else done something like that?

Thanks!

I will follow this thread because I'm really afraid of stepping on my dress and wrecking it, am not graceful, and am planning to dance. My dress just came in and my shoes should be in soon, and I plan to do my first fitting in a couple weeks; one of the things I'm totally clueless about is what length to ask her to aim for, and bustling techniques.

I am a little confused, do you want it shorter in the back, than in the front?

Depends on the fabric, details etc. I just shared this site, which I found really informative on bustle styles. Looks like an Austrian or English bustle could pull it up around ankle height for you.

You might also wear lower heels or flats for the ceremony, them raise the hem when it's bustled by wearing higher heels.

Looking at the site Emilyg linked, I think what you're after is more of a "train flip" bustle that goes all the way around so your entiiiiiire skirt is magically several inches shorter. I'm only an amateur at sewing, but I don't see why that couldn't work.

Emilyg, thanks so much for that link to the site about bustling techniques. I feel like I've been to school!

I'd like it much shorter all around. And after doing my own research, it does seem like a train flip is what I'm thinking. It's got that outer layer of net/tulle so I'm pretty sure it and the under layer could be flipped under and create a bubble hem. Because it also has asymmetrical rutching, a side sweep might also work but I've never seen it done very high off the floor.
