High neck dress

Michaela, on May 8, 2023 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19
I’m having a hard time looking for a wedding dress with a high neck. Yes, a high neck like a 1980s style dress. I know it’s unpopular these days and seems out of fashion but I love the look for myself and it’s what I’ve always dreamed of. Unfortunately, I’m finding a *very* limited selection. Most salons have no high neck dresses at all. My budget is limited and I am open to a pre-owned dress. Does anyone happen to know of a place where high necks are still a thing? This photo is fairly representative of what I’m looking for. High neck dress 1
Thanks for any guidance anyone has to offer!!

While wedding dress shopping, I did noticed a few high neck dresses by Eras Atelier and Morilee.

I don't think it's 80s at all. It's actually en trend and a style of Paris Hilton, Kate Middleton, Grace Kelly, Priyanka Chopra, etc. Below are a couple articles on fabric recommendations, designers, and current styles. If you go with a sleeveless gown, you can also opt for gloves for more modesty. Sheer, fingerless gloves are hot right now, too. Some capes go over the head and have a collar as well.

White dresses are big this spring also, so you may find a dress that fits your budget from a department store and not listed as a wedding dress per say. Good luck.

You're right, they are surprisingly hard to find! It seems like JJ's House had the most, but of course people have mixed experiences with that site.

One thing you could do is get a strapless dress and then wear a cape with a high neck on top of it. Alternately, are you open to going to Kleinfeld? I think there's a consultant there who specializes in modest wedding gowns. She can get you alterations for a high neck, long sleeves, etc.

I don’t have any suggestions of where to buy. I do want to comment that I like the uniqueness of this
style. Searching for a dress with sleeves was a struggle so I understand your challenge.

Try searching for modest wedding dresses. Maybe Mennonite, but that may be less decorative. Also search vintage or historic wedding dresses. These options may get you to some bridal shops or designers with a style you are looking for.

Thank you to everyone who has responded so far. Unfortunately for me, I think my very specific taste totally outpaces my budget. I had my heart set on a modern, traditional A-line dress with an elegant lacy or satin-y high neck, but I don’t believe I will ever find that within my budget; it doesn’t exist. My second choice is totally different and is also relatively uncommon but I’ll find it eventually, it just won’t be my first choice. Just for fun, and to tease myself, I’m including some more examples with photos below. They are all obviously very expensive.

What is your budget? The links listed above are mostly under $1000 and some as low as $200

The links you sent are very helpful, the dresses are mostly within my budget and I will certainly do more research along those lines. I’m just not optimistic about finding what I’m looking for under $1,000.

I’m not sure what your budget is, but Morilee has some options under $2,000.

I just wanted to update here that I have been researching all the links and suggestions you all have offered and I’m feeling more optimistic that I will find something I like. When I first posted, I thought people would respond negatively toward the idea of a high neck, like it’s a frumpy relic of Victorian England or something . I see now that a few celebrities have worn wedding dresses recently with high necks, but they are celebrities so they can do whatever they want. What did you all think of the photos I posted? I think they’re beautiful but would people look at a bride in a dress like that and think she looks prudish and frumpy? I am not from a culture that necessarily requires modesty.

Your posts did not make it sound like you were needing this for modesty goals. There is quite a variety of tastes brides have expressed here and each is different. If you want sort of a style that is between conventional and Victorian, the Morilee could work -- but still seems a bit over your comfortable price range.

Could you do a dress topper with skirt, or 2-piece separates? Or custom order with the sleeves you like? Can even add a sash if inclined.

    Tops:

    Etsy sparkle topper

    Pearl topper

    Lace topper

    Jacket

    Jacket w/buttons

    Skirts:

    HP skirt

    Pronovias skirt

I’m really looking for a modern but traditional, A-line dress with a high lace or satin neck that basically covers the entire neck (so like a 3-4 inch high collar).

To answer your last question, I don't think you will appear frumpy if you add modern hair and accessories. If the dress has some sheer or nude color with the lace, you can break up the all white visual (pics above). The 2nd pic with hay in the background, however, does show the effect when white lace is on top of white underlayer. To me, the lace drowns out. There are also different types of lace, and some like chantilly are more vintage in look. Overall, a dress with good quality fabric, design, and fit will always look chic. There's a reason this shape is known to be regal. Good luck.
