Hey everyone! What do you think of destination weddings? Yes or No?

Lily, on April 8, 2020 at 5:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

Is there anybody out there thinking about getting married abroad? It it really a lot of hustle? I have many guests coming from abroad already, so I am very unsure what would be the best. Smiley atonished

Usually, I would say destination weddings seem nice. There would definitely be a lower guest count as not everyone has the money to travel. But, it's nice as you get to be married in another part of the world. My main concern with destination weddings at this current time is the pandemic.

I'm having a destination wedding. I would suggest speaking to a travel agent. Super helpful. It's a little more stressful since you unable to physically be there to see, taste, experience anything until the day a couple days before your wedding. Alot of trusting in the vendors you have chosen and resorts. I still think it's worth it if that's what you and your FH wants.

Destination weddings are always a yes! And I love the idea of it simply for lowering the guest count. I purposely chose a weekday for my wedding hoping some of our guest list can’t get the time off of work... oopsss

We are having a destination wedding in the US—and super happy about it. Much lower guest count than it would be if we got married in my hometown. Hire a coordinator/planner if your budget allows. Our coordinator was the first “vendor” we booked, and she was able to help us decide on so many things because she’s familiar with the area and other vendors. We have only seen our venue in person 1x and won’t see anything else until our wedding day.

YES—with caveats. The biggest is guests need extra provisions to counter their high costs. Host a welcome dinner, negotiate an amazing hotel rate for them (and ensure other less expensive options in the area), provide exceptional food & top-shelf alcohol and experience at your wedding, and if there budget pay for their hotel (or 1 night), airport transportation or other travel expenses.

We had a DW in our same state and due to costs for us and guests, we did a micro-wedding with 15 guests, then a local reception later for 50 guests. For our DW guests, a welcome dinner was provided. We negotiated a great rate at our resort and recommended several affordable options. We also chose off season and a weekday for cheaper hotel rates for us & guests. Most guests could drive, or buy an inexpensive 1-hour flight.
As a guest, I’ve declined about half the DWs I’ve been invited to. Just too expensive.

We did a DW and don’t regret it at all. We wanted the lower guest count- we only had immediate family! It was perfect for us Smiley smile

I think on one hand the idea is really cool because it is a vacation too. but on the other, it's kind of a lot of money for a guest

Destination weddings are great if you are looking for smaller gatherings. If you're planning a large wedding, I'd probably steer from it, unless the overall cost for your guests is comparable to what it would cost to have local wedding.

We're doing a DW in Jamaica in October. Sandals resorts has wedding planners that reach out to you every few months and then once you get there there's a team to do on-site, hands on planning/decorating. They've made the process pretty seamless thus far. We've also had a travel agent from hell that has made the go between harder than just me strictly dealing with the resort.

I wanted a destination wedding but FH wanted the big traditional wedding. I think DW's are beautiful and romantic, especially if it's a small group. We are having a domestic destination wedding as our middle ground, but our families live throughout the country also so it was easier for us to find something distant versus something "local" as there is no "local" for FH and I. Which location are you thinking of for a DW?
