Help!

Jocelyn, on November 6, 2019 at 7:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 6
So I recently got a quote with a woman whom I met at a wedding expo that does wedding planning, floral arrangements, linens, centerpieces, etc all in one. The entire quote she gave me was 6,000. The one thing that I’m not sure how to feel about is that her company is from home. She has three great reviews on her Facebook page. I’m just scared that it’ll be scam? She was kind of pushing us to make a decision two days after meeting her, and said we could send her the deposit money or bring it cash which is $500. I’m kinda just not sure what to do at this point? Is that like an average on what someone would normally spend all together for the things I mentioned?

I’m not sure about how reputable she is, but I’m not a fan of these “all in one” vendors in general. I’d rather have one really good planner, one really good florist, etc. than pay one person a ton of money to just be okay at a bunch of things. I would imagine that the bridal expo checks credibility of their vendors before they’re allowed to participate. Perhaps you could ask her to show you a portfolio of other weddings she’s done. Also make sure that she provides a contract if you do decide to go with her.

Like always, I agree with Caytlyn. In addition, I'd contact other vendors and do an item-by-item price comparison to see if $6000 is a "good deal" or not for the services she's offering. I'd also ask her for the contact info of several past clients (phone or email), so you can call them and get their direct feedback. If she can't or won't provide that, look elsewhere. Most importantly, listen to your gut; if it's telling you something doesn't seem right, she's not the right vendor for you. Good luck!

PS Also, I wouldn't assume that all vendors at a Bridal Expo have been vetted/are good. Honestly, great vendors typically don't participate in Bridal Expos -- they don't need to because they get plenty of business from referrals and they are FULLY BOOKED on weekends, so they have no reason to waste a weekend having a booth and trying to attract clients. I think it's more typical that Bridal Expo vendors are just starting out/building their business and/or representatives from bigger companies/brokers that do more "assembly line" type work (like the big photography companies that sell relatively inexpensive packages, but you won't actually know WHO is shooting your wedding because they are just a middle man for independent contractors). That was our experience anyway.

I would just be concerned with the fact that she only has three reviews. Those could easily be from friends/family members trying to help promote her business, I wouldn't trust it. I can also see the concern of PP's about having all-in-one vendors, I don't have any experience with them but I'd be worried it might be a bunch of mediocre products/services rather than one outstanding product/service.

It's definitely a reasonable quote for what you would be getting, but I agree with some of the other girls that I prefer to hire people that are good at ONE skill and not okay at a bunch. Also, the 3 reviews kind of freaks me out a bit!

I would also get quotes from other vendors just to see if you're truly getting the best deal. I do see how you'd be more inclined to go with one vendor who can do multiple things since it is less people to deal with. But it is true that it's not always cheaper that way.

The 3 reviews would make me feel some kind of way on top of her being so pushy about it and demanding how the deposit could be paid. I found a wedding planner decently priced, quoting me at $1900 for partial so needless to say even going full planning would be pretty cheap. I found him on Thumbtack and then saw that he also had a profile here on WW.

I'd definitely give Thumbtack a try and see what you find for whatever it is you need. Even if it's still $6k, you could still see how many reviews they have plus as a bonus see if their business won any awards. You can also see how many times they've been hired and how long they've been in the business.

    Good Luck!
