help with creating flower arrangement for a large vase

April, on August 2, 2014 at 3:52 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

I have bought 15 very large nice vases, 27 inches high for my centerpieces. I am trying to figure out how to create the flower arrangements at the top.

How to add pictures so I can show what I am referring to?

There should be an "attach photo" section below the comment box when you can upload a picture.

Look on you youtube. They have tutorials for everything! they probably have a floral foam sitting at the top and stuck the flowers inside because I don't see the stems going down. Just the calla lilys inside.

The foam is taped to the top of the vase with floral tape, or it is a metal mesh over the foam (these arrangements are top heavy and will fall over at the slightest push on the table). First you fill the vase and place the inner flowers into the vase, then soak your floral foam so it is wet, place the foam at the top of the vase and tape it to the vase both vertically and horizontally to hold it in place. Start by placing flowers along the bottom facing directly outwards (horizontally towards you) place three rows of flowers facing outwards, working you way up from the bottom. then place two rows with flowers angled upwards at a 45 degree angle along the corner of the floral foam block. place the last flowers at the top of the foam block pointing directly upwards towards the ceiling. You will want to try this before you do it, or look into floral foam that is inside a plastic form in case the weight of the flowers pulls it apart, or tie the foam with string before y ou stick the flowers into it. But definitely try it and shake the table a few times at different time blocks (need to last 4-5 hours).

Thank you so much, you explained that very well. Yeah I see it will be top heavy but I will have white rocks at the bottom. I am definitely going to do a test run first

Professional advice -- There's a far better method than trying to tape wet oasis to a glass vase (that method makes transporting them to your venue pretty difficult). Measure the opening of your vase and then purchase plastic floral bowls to fit that particular vase. Put your soaked oasis in the bowl and then tape it in with floral tape (remember to leave the oasis with some height. That's the only way you're going to be able to position your stems in a downward position, and if you can't do that, you'll never get that full look shown in the picture). Then drop the bowl inside the opening of the vase. Begin arranging. When you're ready to transport them to your venue, lift the arrangements out of the vase. For some stability, when you reassemble them at the venue, run a line of hot glue around the rim of the vase, and then immediately drop the bowl back in. It's not a permanent bond, but it should stabilize the pieces for several hours during your reception. For anyone interested, if you're thinking of using Eiffel vases, stick with the shorter ones. The tall ones, while lovely, are the absolute worst in terms of stability. We've had them secured to flat pieces of acrylic so they don't tip.

April DK -- I'm not getting a good image of what you posted, but I believe I'm seeing dendrobium orchids in that centerpiece. You'll be shocked at how many stems you're going to need for each centerpeice. They aren't inexpensive flowers. You may want to consider including other larger flowers that cover a lot of territory -- like hydrangeas. Add the orchids as accent stems. It will give you a similar look without the bigger price tag.

Yes i agree with Centerpiece Floral Design. I am using huge 3 ft tower vases and they actually make floral bowl pretty cheap that fit right in the top. i am placing my foam balls in that then putting flowers. i am ALSO filling the vases with raw rice or sand. so stability . those are the two designs i am doing..

@The Centerpiece, wow. You explained it well, but it still hard for me to grasp lol. I guess that's why people like me call the pros like you. My version would never resemble that.

@theCenterpieceFlowers, Thank you so much, u knew exactly what I needed. I can follow that pretty good. The cost, I received the really nice vases off of Craiglist, really heavy glass n rocks included for a really good price. I am starting to price wholesale flowers online now, my Wedding is next July, so I am hoping to catch many sales between now and next Summer
