Help wedding dress seam too short!

Lucy, on May 18, 2015 at 6:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hi , I'm having a mini meltdown! Picked up my dress and it's too short at front! I mentioned I thought it was too short in fitting room and the woman put me in smaller kitten heels. I mentioned when I came put to full length mirror I still felt it was too short and she said bcos mirror at an angle! I felt bad as I had flown over to pick up dress with mum and was so excited that I didn't really stand my ground. I left and on my return home my shoes had arrived- I put dress on and you can see shoes! Thing is when I tried sample dress she recommended 3 inch heels which was just right length so that's what I bought! My own dress has therefore come up shorter!

I rang shop and they were really dismissive and said wear flats or see if seamstress can do anything ! The dress is lace and cost my poor mum

A fortune! I don't want flats to my wedding! I want to feel and look my best! I'm seeking seamstress to see if she can work magic? If not surely shop has responsibility to sort?advice please

Reach out to a seamstress and relay the information. They may be able to help. I would guess that upwards of 90% of wedding dresses require some sort of alterations.

Thanks guys. It's just so disappointing to see such a beautiful dress not shown off to its full glory and it doesn't feel 'right on' I could kick myself that didn't stand my ground more but at the end of the day if the seamstress can't sort then I will contact then again and ask then to sort plan b. I'm not wanting to be difficult I just want to be happy in the dress!

As a worker in a alterations department, I can already tell you that a seamstress cannot add extra. If the seamstress you manage to find can add on a lace dress, they usually ask for you to provide the material and it costs a fortune to have extra put on, especially if it's going to be 3 inches and all lace.

Is the shop not responsible for getting the measurements right? I took their professional advice and expected the length to be the same as the sample!

My mum is now calling the shop!

I have a similar issue. Mine was the opposite. I had made a custom length order and paid extra for that. The gown came with the standard order. The salesperson did the same thing. She was like sometimes it came 1 inch longer and so on. She even measured the shoes I brought to see if they were the same ones. At the end I requested them to bring the one I tried on and see if it was the same length. And yes, that was the exact same gown. It is lace all over and the alteration person said it was very difficult to alter it. So, the salesperson tried to sell me a petticoat to make the gown puffier. It is not working! I kept stepping on the dress. She kept saying I walked too fast and all that. It made me feel like I was a non-lady type whatever.

You should definitely go back to the shop and ask them to bring out the gown you've tried on. Basically proof that it was their fault. You still have some time. Good luck!

Was the sample that you tried on a bigger size? If it was, that explains why it was longer, but Im surprised the store didn't mentioned anything to you when you ordered the dress. They need to be responsible for that and help you find a solution. (Wearing flats on your wedding dress is NOT a solution)

I have been to two seamstresses and tried on with shoes and both said at least 1 inch short- I'm not going mad! As last resort she said they can add nice and half of lace and will not be noticeable - if I can get lace from supplier.

The shop are convinced is no shorter! I am now sending the dress next Monday and my mum will go into shop and watch them measure sample and my dress and see of there is a length disparity . If there is they said its as manufacturing issue and they will sort. If same length, it's my issue! I'm which case I will need to get my hands on the extra lace. I am kicking myself that I signed to say ok and collected dress but cant do much about that now. Just need to hope that I get positive news next week!

Does anyone have any tips on how my mum approaches the shop next week? They seem very dismissive and I'm even wondering how truthful they will be when measuring the sample against my dress!!

Perhaps the sample dress has stretched in length while hanging?

This probably doesn't help, but in my world, these two sentences contradict each other:

"I don't want flats to my wedding! I want to feel and look my best!" :-P
