help! We need to elope in Massachusetts !

Ashlee, on September 1, 2015 at 8:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

My fiancé and I are struggling to find a location for our ceremony and on top of that our JOP fell through ! We are having a very intimate ceremony with us, our two young children and our two best friends. We aren't looking for anything crazy or asking much. It will probably take all of a half hour from start to finish. We want to do it outdoors with the fall foliage around us. Any suggestions/ideas welcome and MUCH appreciated !!

I am going to assume that you have your license by now (or have filed the intention)... Would you consider going to your local city hall/ courthouse and having the ceremony there? Then have a little celebration at a park? What part of MA are you in? I am not sure there is going to be that much colorful foliage by next week (unless, possibly if you are in the Berkshires ) .

Go to American Association of Wedding Officiants. We are online and on Facebook. If you can't find it, message me with your information and I can post it to my regional board there.

For a location for an intimate wedding, you might look at Acton House. We and all our guests stayed there the night before our wedding and the wedding night. They can sleep up to 22, but there are separate units so you can have as few as two people, and just pay for the units you actually use. There is a yard with a pool, and they allow ceremonies there. (You can move it inside if it rains.) Here's the VRBO listing:

For an officiant, you can hire one, or use a friend. Massachusetts allows anyone to serve as an officiant for a day. Here is a link to the procedure if you want to use a friend:

As Celia says, a professional officiant will probably do a better job, but only you can know what your priorities are.

If your looking for fall foliage, I think you have to wait a little longer. If you want majestic mountain views and don't mind a drive.... Go to Mount Greylock. Highest peak in Ma, you can drive right up and park and there's plenty of amazing spots up there. Its out in North Adams

I agree with Jennifer, waiting till closer to october may get you the fall foliage that you want. also if you head out toward the berkshires those leaves should be starting to turn earlier

A friend of my FH eloped last month. They went to the courthouse in Boston and then out for drinks with their grown children and the bride's mother (who was visiting from Brazil). They took a ton of photos and it looked gorgeous. A courthouse wedding is the way to go!

I saw an absolutely gorgeous wedding happen in the Boston Public Gardens. My fiance and I considered it for our wedding. It's $100 for nonresidents or $50 for residents to get a permit to get married there. You could wait until October and get some really stunning pictures.
