Help!! Songs for the father daughter dance when the relationship is strained

Caiten, on February 8, 2018 at 3:10 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 1
My wedding is in 22 days and I still can't find a song to dance to with my Dad. We have never been close, he tries to portray to others he is "super dad" but has never shown any interest in my life or well being. My Grandpa has always been my "father figure" so he will be walking me down the aisle. But unless I want to deal with an entire family upset with me I have to include my Dad as well. But most father daughter songs just make me cringe because they in no way for the relationship that o have with my dad.

I'm sorry that you have this issue. I've known several women with strained relationships with their fathers, and it can cause conflicting issues regarding wedding planning.

I'm sure you've heard it numerous times, but I'll say it again: it's your wedding, so you can do what you want. If you feel closer to your grandfather, then dance with your grandfather. If you want to dance with your mom, then do that, too. The idea of traditional weddings is only as traditional as you want it to be, because in this day and age anything goes (within reason).

With that being said, my sister has always had a strained relationship with our stepfather (our biological father passed away when we were young) but felt that she had to have the father/daughter dance when she got married to keep the drama issue at a minimum and had the same problem of choosing a song that wasn't "sappy". She ended up using Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". It worked out perfectly: not too sappy, a little light tempo, and no reference to the relationship. It worked out great.

Hope this helps. Good luck, congratulations, and remember that the day is about you and the love of your life. *HUGS*
