HELP! satin wedding gown has odd creases

Christine, on May 19, 2015 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

HELP! To anyone who has ever worn a satin wedding gown or any seamstresses out there... I have a satin strapless trumpet style gown that after 3 fittings with a professional seamstress has two odd creases. First, there is a prominent fold in the fabric at the waist. The dress has a built in corset that has already been shortened twice because the corset lines were visible in the back. The second issue is at my hips, right where your legs bend, the fabric makes this odd fold. The dress was already taken out once in the hips in hopes the fold would go away. It did not. The fold is prominent when standing and photographs even more prominent. My seamstress is frustrated with me asking her to keep trying to fix these issues. She also doesn't speak English very well so I feel the language barrier makes our interactions more challenging. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what is causing these issues and how they could be corrected ?

It looks like it may be a little too loose, and is bagging a bit! I'm not a professional, though, so I could be wrong! Gorgeous dress, though! I pray you're able to solve the issue

My dress was doing the same and they are taking two inches out in the thighs I go back on June 5th to try it on. Hopefully it works. I'll let you know once I go back. If it doesn't I'll see what other options they give me

I don't think its tight enough. Talk to the person in alterations and ask them.

Maybe an under layer is not sitting flat? That could be part of it.

Thanks for the suggestions and kind words. The was tighter and had been let out at the waist and hips. Before it was let out the creases were much worse, so much so that it made it look like I had a belly bulge. It was so tight at my hips that you could see the indent of my pelvic bone. Shannon, that would really be helpful to know how your gown turns out after your next fitting. I have so much anxiety worrying that it's not something that can be fixed and I'm going to be stuck wearing something I'm not happy with. As of now my seamstress is going to take it out even more at the waist and hip to see if that helps. I wonder because satin is a heavier fabric and doesn't have any stretch to it, if all satin gowns that have a flat front would have that same crease ?

Have you tried it on with spanks? The issue they will run into to the beading in the back my bet is they only let the front panel out because if they let the sides and back out there will be blank spaces in the beading if that is the case there isn't much that can be done

I second the Spanx suggestion. Especially try it on with Spanx in a "slippery" feeling fabric. I had a n evening dress with a similar hip/crotch fold that looked a million times better with Spanx shorts.

Beautiful dress, I was going to say it looks loose. Good luck.

Satin is a weird fabric, here is a way to tell if you have the dress get some t pins ( they look like big t s) at Walmart hobby lobby or one of type stores try your dress on have someone pin the sides in (don't worry about holes they work out of the satin) if the pucker goes away that's what needs to be done if not try spanks or even an old fashioned slip ( if your mom doesn't have one try bells belk's Dillard's sometimes sears) undergarments can make an amazing difference. I am a seamstress have altered many a gown as well as made them my mom used to make them and alter them.

Is it possible to add a beaded belt around the waist to hide the line if they can't fix it. I would keep in line with the same design as the dress. The hip area seems like the fabric isn't sewn evenly causing the creasing. Not an expert though.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have not tried spanx but I can do so at my next fitting. I'm not sure if it will do much for the crease at the hip. In the pictures it give the appearance that it could be too tight around my belly but when it's on i can feel some slack at the sides. I have a completely flat stomach so think it's actually something weird with the fabric. The crease happens in that empty space that exists if you look at a side profile of someone where the legs bend at the hip. I've never worn satin before so it's hard to say for sure. But to me it seems like all of the weight of the train even when it's bustled, pulls to the back and emphasizes the crease. If I stand in the dress, tuck my butt under and push my hips forward the crease goes away considerably. But obviously I can't walk around like that on my wedding day lol. But that leaves me to believe that it has something to do with either the fabric or the weight of it or the stitching. I wonder... Could something be sewn inside the dress to hold that crease out? I feel like perhaps if some bulk could be added to that spot it would smooth out that crease. I'm not a professional but as someone stated before, Maybe the stitching is off ? The dress has princess seams which I know are supposed to help a garment have a better fit to curves on a body. Perhaps if the princess seams in the front were taken in or restitched ? My seamstress has sort of given up and doesn't really know what to do. She says that's just how the dress is because but I feel like there must be a solution. I want to be able to go back to her and offer some suggestions as to how it could be fixed

I have a satin dress that does this at the crotch area and it's because my butt is too big, if it was let out in the back more it wouldn't bunch up in the front area creating that pouch

I forgot to mention, the beading is actually lace appliqués with hand stitched beads on top. The seamstress has been removing them by hand every time she takes it in or out. So it can be done, it's just very time consuming which I can understand is part of the reason why she doesn't want to keep taking it out and then back in.
