Help! Reception Food Ideas!?

Baylee, on July 8, 2019 at 1:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
Okay so I've been trying to come up with a different take on food than the traditional dinner catering because that is above my budget and I would really like to go for something more on the snack-ish/dessert side, but I'm struggling to find a list of ideas that fall into this category! I've been thinking of dessert bars, popcorn bars, or just plain crackers and cheese, but I'm not sure if these are good ideas or not. Our wedding will be well before dinner time so as not to starve people, but I just am so overwhelmed by wondering if these ideas are good or not, and by trying to find other creative ideas. What advice/what did you do for your wedding reception food??

My sister didn't have a full meal! First off, plan your wedding at a different time than a typical meal time (i.e. don't do a 5pm-10pm, maybe think 1pm-6pm) so people don't expect a meal.

My sister did cheese plates, veggie trays, fruits, mini quiche, cake & punch!

I will be doing a pizza & salad because we found a place for $1300 for 250 guests

That's exactly what I've been trying to imagine! Thank you!! Also, it helps to hear that I'm not being a horrible bride by not feeding everyone a full meal... Lifesaver!!

If you plan to host your reception around lunch time maybe a fast food catering option will work? Something like Chipotle or Panera Bread? You can usually get those catering options for around $10/per person.

Or maybe a pasta bar with some bread and salad for sides or a nacho/DIY taco bar?

Personally, I'd prefer lunch food as a guest rather than sweets or popcorn but I'm always hungry haha.

Totally fine to not serve a full meal but I would make sure things end by 5 so people can do something for dinner and I wouldn’t start it earlier than 130 so people can eat lunch before.

I had never even thought about doing anything like that! Panera does great catering too! Thank you!

I was thinking our sweet-spot would be 2ish start time and 5/6ish end time, so that people can do just that. Thanks!

It sounds like you're on the right track! Cake and punch receptions are popular options for couples on a budget, and you could always check out caterers as well as local restaurants and even food trucks if you want to include some app stations or some heavy hors d'ouvres

I agree with Stephanie- many chains will offer catering at a cheaper price. Some big name in my area are Chipotle, Qdoba, La Prima, Panera, and Mission BBQ. Foods that are easy to prepare in bulk and don't require much in the way of prep or serving tend to be cheaper.

I went to a wedding where they did "stations" for like mashed potatoes with white, sweet, and purple potatoes and toppings. Then in another area it was pizza, ice cream, donuts...etc. I loved it - it was so fun! Some ideas aside from the already mentioned: fruit and yogurt/granola, salad, chicken wings, burgers, tacos or fajitas, omelets, and ramen or pho.

We are having brick oven fired pizza, salad and appetizers and it's only going to cost about $1500. If that's still too much, how about a grazing table, they are yummy and pretty Smiley smile
