I would read a ton of reviews. I would also ask for samples of their work and a list of songs they play.

I totally get it. Our wedding was out of state so I booked most of our vendors before we met them.

We had a DW so we had to trust the venue’s recommendations. We also found vendors on Gigmasters & Gigsalad (our musicians), Yelp & WeddingWire. We looked/listened to their online galleries, read their reviews, and also talked to each vendor before we booked them. All were fantastic!

I agree with the PP. Read their reviews and if you know people in the area where he lives and mainly works, ask if they've heard of him or have worked with him. My FH chose our DJ based off of a recommendation from my FH's best friend.

When asking questions, don't feel like you're over-asking. Get as much information from him as possible. Since he is from out-of-state one of my first questions would be if he requires the bride and groom to pay for his accommodations. I know it is typically common for the bride and groom to pay for out-of-town DJ's or musicians but it ultimately depends on the person. Also ask for samples of their work if they have any. What their style is, how long they would need to set up and clean up, and so on. If you're venue does not give you access the full day of your wedding, your musician may be pressed for time to set up. When you sign the contract or pay your deposit for them, make sure you get a copy of the contract and make a copy of the check. If you pay cash, make sure they give you a receipt; I know that's common knowledge but just in case something happens, you want to make sure you can cover yourself.
