Help! 😭 Our Venue Just Changed the Rules

Olesia, on November 30, 2023 at 8:29 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 8

We got a last minute notice that our outdoor venue won't be allowing "amplified" sound equipment because of noise complaints. We hired a professional vocalist and DJ for accompaniment but now we won't be able to play anything recorded. No idea what to do next. We have no time left to find an acoustic performer and that's not the vibe we were going for at all anyway.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry. I know that has to be so frustrating and disappointing! Unfortunately, it sounds like this isn't a choice your venue is making, but rather something they are being forced to do. The only option around this that I can think of is to check with your local law enforcement to see if there are any regulations regarding noise. Most local municipalities will have specific rules, such as a time of night when noise regulations go into effect. And many have decibel regulations, which a DJ can accommodate. If that's the case, I would go to your venue with that information and ensure them that you would adhere to local laws. The main concern there would be that the neighbors (or whoever has complained) will do so again, and could potentially interrupt your reception. However, if your venue is armed with the regulations and you are adhering to them, they could meet any law enforcement and ensure them you are operating within the local regulations.

They seemed strict about the no amplification rule and didn't budge on the phone at all 😣

I would try going in armed with knowledge of local regulations (ie, going in and saying I spoke with local law enforcement and this is what they said, these are the rules/regulations that the neighbors have to abide by). Then, if they still won't allow you to have your DJ while operating within the limits of local laws/regulations, I would request a discount on the venue. It's one thing if they have no choice in the matter, but it's another if there is a viable LEGAL way to do so, and they are just refusing. And I am assuming the use of DJ was approved prior, which means they would be in breach of contract (yet another reason to demand a discount/partial refund). The only other option you have is to quickly find another venue available and get a full refund from the current venue, or to simply operate within the current venue's new rules.

I've done some research and it seems like the only option is to operate within the current venue's new rules. I have no idea how that would work though.

Does the contract state the venue can do whatever they want without X days of notice and that they are outside local or state ordinances and laws? If they are in any breach of the agreed upon contract, the venue should work with you or give you a discount, and you should remind them of that. Or do you not have a contract?
