Help! My engagement ring is hurting my ring finger!

Kate, on April 3, 2015 at 12:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I'm not really sure why this is happening so I thought I'd reach out to you all. I've been engaged for 6 months now and I haven't taken my engagement ring off for the majority of that time. Over the course of the winter, I noticed it was a tiny bit large (in that the ring would spin frequently and I'd have to correct it all of the time or there would be a gap). I figured I'd wait until the summer to get it resized to make sure it wasn't just that my cold hands were making it too big.

Well now, it's still slightly too big, but I've got a line along the palm-side of my ring finger where my ring hits and a little above of raw, blistered skin that's sensitive to the touch. It hurts to wear my ring now! I'm not sure what to do! I did some searching online and most people who have problems with their engagement rings have dermatitis and rash -- but I don't have a rash. Just raw, cracked skin.

Any advice? Is this from my ring sliding around on my finger? What else could cause this??

I work in a jewelry store and see this all the time. Chances are it's because you don't really take it off. You should be taking your ring off when you shower, sleep, go to the gym, etc. Because you're not moisture can stay under your ring as well as other stuff like sweat, excess soap, etc. Overtime this can cause the skin to be dry and cracked under.

Also, if you sent having it cleaned frequently different things could be stuck under your stones and causing your ring to have reactions. I would get it cleaned and maybe not wear it for a week or so until it heals.

You should not wear it until you heal. Make sure you disinfect the abrasion. If you always wear it, moisture can be getting underneath and moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Yep, agreed. Treat the area and get your ring cleaned. If it persists after your finger is initially healed then I would check if you're allergic to the metal or try a ring gaurd to keep it in place instead of rubbing. You can buy cheap-o plastic guards at walmart.

This happen to me within the first week of me wearing my ring. Mines isn't that bad but there is bruising and it hurts to put on my ring. I've started taking mines off when I sleep and shower.. It helps for the most part.

It's from wearing your ring all the time like another poster said.

I usually take mine off and put it in the cleanser when I am home for the night.

I take mine off when I sleep and it helps keep my skin from getting too irritated.
