Help my dress is too tight!

SA, on June 29, 2021 at 1:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I posted a really long post and didn't get many responses, so reposting a short version:

Stylist recommended a size 4, I ordered a size 6 knowing I wanted to gain 5-6lbs since my face was too thin (which I told the stylist). Gained 6.5lbs and now the size 6 is too snug.

Seamstress said she could let it out a bit and I shouldn't lose weight. But, it's silk so I'm afraid thread holes will be visible. And don't think letting it out a bit will do much as I can barely sit.

Don't really want to lose more than 2-3lbs at most and although I'll have it let out, I still think I'll look like an overstuffed sausage. Ugh.

I think it's worth seeing if letting it out a little would help! It would def. give you a little more room to breathe and move a little bit. But please know that you do NOT look like an overstuffed sausage lol!! You look amazing, and I applaud you on your weight journey. Whether it's losing or gaining, it can be stressful, and I'm sorry that you're having dress troubles!

Try letting it out, a good seamstress will know how to work with the fabric so it'll look perfect! If you're still having trouble sitting, you may be able to google or search online tips on how to sit with your dress style!

Ok I hadn't seen your previous post until now, and I don't have any excellent advice, but you definitely will not look like an overstuffed sausage! I think you may lose 2 or 3 pounds without even noticing, just from the stress leading up to the wedding - that's what I've always heard, anyway! I'm so glad you went with a size 6 also! Hopefully you won't have to let it out...although if you did, it would probably be so minor that the thread holes wouldn't be too visible!

Thank you so much for your super kind response! The seamstress didn't seem at all concerned about letting it out. She thought it would be an easy fix. But, I've always heard that letting it out is tricky and could be an issue so I'm just worried it will look bad.

But yea great call on googling tips for how to sit in a ridiculously tight mermaid dress. It is a tight design so it probably would be hard to sit down in no matter what, but hopefully not as hard as it was yesterday! I had to like lean back and have my legs sort of straight lol. The stylist yesterday (not the same one who recommended a size 4) was like maybe you could get a barstool or a booster to make it easier to sit

Thanks so much--super sweet and very much appreciated!!

Yea I tend to lose weight when I'm stressed, so I could lose most of the weight I gained (and then be bummed that I lost my booty and the fullness from my face).

And yea thank goodness I pushed back on the 4! She really pushed me to get it and I am so glad I held firm. I honestly don't think a 4 would have fit me at my previous weight, so I'm not sure if she measured me wrong or what happened, but I'm a little pissed that she didn't advise that gaining 5-6lbs could push me into a size 8. In hindsight, I should have realized that the 4 was likely a street size 0, which I wasn't at the time. I was a 2. Now I'm a 4. Live and learn I guess lol.

While a size 4 sample probably would have fit, a brand new size 4 probably would have been small. Samples have been tried on and therefore are slightly stretched out. Dresses can typically be let out two sizes, so it should be able to be done to fit you perfectly! The dress looks gorgeous!

Just adding to the chorus that I think if you let it out a little, plus the stress leading up to the day, hopefully it will fit perfectly and you look STUNNING, not like a sausage at all.

Incredible the suggestions these consultants made, though! A barstool? really? and I wonder if the original one didn't put in the right measurements or measure right in the first place, for the dress to be so tight? Thank goodness you didn't listen to her. And what foolish advice - it is always better to get a slightly larger size and take it in than a smaller one!

Thank you so much Smiley smile. And, I know right? What on earth were they thinking?!? These are the people who are supposed to know best.

And yea I totally agree about the measuring. I was just thinking back and I remember that she pulled the measuring tape tight, which I thought you weren't supposed to do but I just figured I was wrong and she knew what she was doing. Nope. If she'd measured correctly and not pulled it tight so that my skin and fat were bulging around it, I would likely have been a 6 back then, so I would have known to order an 8. Ugh just so annoying.

The thing is, dresses take ages to come in, and there likely isn't enough time for the majority of people to change their dresses to a larger size. If the consultant is doing that for every client, aren't they likely to get a bunch of bad reviews and furious brides who can't fit into their dresses? It doesn't make any sense!
