Help me decide between these shoes!

Kari, on January 18, 2020 at 3:08 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 7

Warning! Essay ahead!

Our ceremony will be outside (on grass) and I was having a difficult time finding shoes that were the right height so that I didn't need further alterations to my dress. Well I've finally found shoes (two pairs of them) and now I'm struggling to pick which ones!

I ordered two pairs of Badgley Mischka Jewel wedges from Nordstrom and then my mom found me some short heels at Nordstrom Rack. One pair of wedges is too tall for my dress (so those will need to go back), but the others are the right height and I like the color and silhouette of them quite a bit.

I love the color of the wedges, but they are satin, so a bit shinier than I want and I also don't know if they'll show dirt easily. Also the toe strap is placed a bit low and leaves my pinkie toe almost free to roam (see comparison photo), which was pointed out in one review I read, but not mentioned in others (so I don't know how problematic in real life it might be). They have a rhinestone strap (in my photos I left it covered in case I want to return them) so some extra bling, which I'm on the fence about. I'm also unsure if the rhinestones might catch on my dress (which is lace, but has a built in slip/liner). The extra sparkle definitely makes them seem more special occasion, so good for a wedding but it will probably be more difficult to repurpose them for another event. They're definitely more delicate looking and a "prettier" shoe than the heels, but either pair is mostly hidden by my dress. These are smidge higher than the heels, but I still think the height works with my dress and the extra 1/4 inch or so of height could be beneficial on grass or uneven terrain. They have a gold zipper on the back and you step into them and secure them from behind. I'm happy enough with them that I definitely would keep them if we didn't find the heels.

The heels my mom got me are a bit less "bridal" but they are mostly hidden by my dress so I'm not sure it matters. They are patent (synthetic) leather, so should wipe down easily, but might show scratches as well. The toe strap is a bit thicker and not as delicate, but positioned a bit better than the one on the wedges. They are quite comfortable and I can definitely wear them again with different outfits. I'll be keeping them regardless, because my mom got them for me when we were shopping several states away and it would be a headache to return them, plus they're more comfortable than other "low" dress shoes I have. They secure via an ankle strap that is wrapped in the same color, so there is no exposed hardware. They're probably the perfect height for my dress.

Unfortunately I ordered the wedges before my mom got me the heels, but they hadn't arrived by the time we went shopping (PS: Nordstrom's free shipping option takes forever). When we saw the heels I knew they would work if the wedges didn't, so we bought them just so I'd have something because I was worried we wouldn't be able to find them again (it was Nordstrom Rack and they were only $30).

Both shoes are pretty much invisible under my dress when standing stationary. With the wedges being a smidge higher you see them a bit sooner when I move, but because the color is good and they look dressy and bridal it doesn't matter. My MOH is wearing a dusty rose/coral color (David's "Desert Coral") and my e-ring and wedding band is rose gold so the color of the wedges works really well with those, but the nude of the heels also goes with everything.

I mostly need to decide whether or not I want to return the wedges. I got them on sale, so they weren't too expensive ($60), so if I wear them, even if just for the wedding, I'm okay with that, but I don't actually need them since I have the heels. I have to return the second pair of wedges I bought (not shown) anyway. I have thought about keeping both shoes just so I have the option of changing them if one pair becomes uncomfortable or damaged because I don't have anything else in a similar height. I just don't want to decide to keep the wedges and then never wear them.

Thoughts?

The heels look like the top strap fits better. I would go with those.

I think I like the look of the wedges more, but if the heels are more comfortable that's my vote!

I would go with the one the toe fits best in. The one with rhinestones would look amazing, and I found a tutorial online that shows you how to put tulle on your rhinestones so they don’t catch on your dress. However, the toe thing would bother me the whole day so i think you should go with the plain ones.

No one actually pays attention to your shoes. I would wear the ones that are the most comfortable. The roaming toe thing would drive me crazy all day. IF it's the "bling" that you like you can always add bling to the plain shoes. I found a pair of plain shoes that I wore to a friend's wedding that didn't seem like they were "enough" for the outfit I had. I bought two matching brooches and took the pin backs off and glued the brooches to the shoe. Made it more blingy and totally fit the look better and it lasted through the wedding and dancing and everything with no problems. They actually lasted for a few years until I decided to change them up again and take the brooches off and added strings of crystal beads to them for a different formal event.

Thanks! I actually don't care about bling on my wedding shoes at all. I considered getting shoe clips (which are honestly an amazing option for brides wanting some pizazz without a dedicated bridal shoe they'll never wear again), but I want the focus to be on my dress, not my shoes, and I think you can only make a short block heel look so elegant anyway.

I agree with all of you about the comfort thing. I didn't even try on both wedges because I'm trying to keep them pristine if I return them, but maybe I'll grab some ped stocking socks and bring them to work so I can do a few laps around my office in them to see how they feel (we don't have any carpet in our house). If they don't feel as secure or comfy as the heels I'll definitely return them.
