Help me- critique my vows

Selena, on September 8, 2019 at 7:14 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4

I have looked these over and over, and need an outside perspective. They currently come in at 587 words, which should be about 3.5-4 minutes (a little over the target, but not sure what I can cut down)

Rob, my love. I choose you.

It is our choice to be married, this choice is more important than the paper, or this ceremony, or even the cake (and you know how much I love cake). I see our marriage as a gentle reminder to choose you, day after day, a reminder to work through the tough days, because the great, and even the mediocre days, are worth it. This ceremony only marks the importance of our choice.

So why do I choose you, every day?
You are caring, thoughtful, and have made me laugh and smile from the moment we met. Your smile, was then and continues to be, one of my favorite things!

You are patient and kind. With me, the kids, your residents, everyone.

You have opened my eyes to the possibility of love, love on a deeper level than I ever experienced or thought possible. Love you can see in your eyes. You live to make me happy and less stressed. You have become a true partner, striving to make my life easier, sharing in my burdens.

You know me like no other person. You have an innate sense of what I need or want, frequently saying or thinking about the same things at the same time.

The way you rest a hand on me as we fall asleep each night, makes me feel secure, loved, cherished. And starting my day with your “good morning, my love” is my favorite part of the day.

Because of you, I see the world as an adventure waiting to happen. Your enthusiasm for life, adds to my eagerness to try new foods, have new experiences, see new places, watch new things on TV, just open to the possibilities. Although I will never try another oyster, that was gross!

I can't wait to grow old with you, laughing at our own jokes, as we stroll hand in hand down the beach. Of course your jokes will be funnier than mine, but I will still crack myself up. It’s guaranteed.

Because of all of your amazing qualities, I chose you and luckily for me, you chose me back.

So, I promise to do all that I can to continue to bring a smile to your face, and especially to your eyes.

I will share my burdens with you and help relieve yours, I will share my joy, and sometimes sorrow, and be there to share in yours, to be fully your partner in this crazy life.

I vow to try new things with you, go on crazy adventures, and even watching your weird shows with you... or maybe just next to you.

I will do my best to continue sharing a brain with you. I will laugh at all your jokes, or at least roll my eyes when appropriate.

I promise to greet you each morning with a “good morning, my love”, even if we are apart. And to not let a day go by without you knowing how much you mean to me.

Before I end I am going to steal some words from a writer, as they tend to have the right words at the right time, this, from an unlikely place for inspiration.

Adapted from You’re the Worst:

“Every day we wake up, we look at each other and say, "Today, again, I choose you”...

I don't declare anything.

Except this.

Rob, every day I will make the choice to love you.

And love you I will.

Wholeheartedly.

That one day.

Because I choose to.”

I think your vows are heartfelt, personal and definitely genuine but the length concerns me. Most bride’s voices are shaking while they read their vows, will you be able to clearly say 4 minute vows in between those possibe happy tears?
I would cut the whole “world is an adventure” paragraph. It’s funny and cute but if you need to shave time it’s an easy one to cut. Your “old with you” paragraph right below it still brings that humor.
The second Good morning my love” helps the audience know your vows are coming to a close, it’s a good placement.

I don’t think you need the wrote from that writer in your vows because your second “Good morning my love” is a great conclusion on its own.

I agree with PP. Ultimately you’re expressing your love for your FH in front of everyone so you should say whatever you feel like you need to say, however, Vows that are 3.5-4 minutes long seems excessive. I’ve been in and to a LOT of weddings and have never seen vows that long, seems a bit much. In my experience, most couples who write their own vows do get very emotional trying to say them so I’d give yourself some leeway in case you need to compose yourself.

I agree with others that the vows are potentially the most important -- and personal -- part of the entire wedding day, at least for the B&G. So, if it's what you and FH want, then do whatever is meaningful to you. This is probably the most important of all the potential, "you do yous" on your wedding days. However, as an outsider reading them, they do seem a bit long and kind of rambling. (I've taught public speaking for more than 25 years, so I have some experience with this....) If I were a guest, I'd definitely zone out, and wait for the conclusion; there's nothing wrong with that, but realize many guests probably won't be hanging on your every word. I agree with PP that beginning and ending with "I choose you," is a nice book-ending and clearly conveys a strong theme. So, even if I'm just half listening, I'll pick up on that. Also, as others have mentioned, I'd consider what you expect your emotional state to be. As an "audience member," I can tell you it is VERY uncomfortable to listen to someone trying to talk while they are crying and having a hard time keeping it together. Because she knew she'd be too emotional, daughter & SIL chose to do traditional "I do" type vows during their ceremony (the pastor made it very personalized by doing a great job of conveying important details about their nearly 10-year relationship), and they exchanged their personal vows while they were alone on their honeymoon. What you've written is very sweet and heartfelt, so if it's what you want to convey, then just do it! Good luck! Smiley heart
