Help!! i am trying to see if i can turn a ball gown to a mermaid dress.

HELP! Has anyone turned a ball gown into a mermaid style dress? I’m not talking like a drastic difference. I like how the black and white hugs the hips more. I have lost 75 pounds in the past two year and I just want it to hug my hips alittle more after my hard work lol.Help!! i am trying to see if i can turn a ball gown to a mermaid dress. 1

You definitely can but it might cost a lot in alterations and you will want to find a seamstress who is experienced in modifying a gowns silhouette. check out the gilded thimble for examples.

I have an aline gown that i wanted to have more of a fitted look. only issue i had was that my gown has a tulle skirt with lace appliqués all over it. i had my seamstress take in the underskirt to a mermaid fit and left the tulle alone. i was unsure but it actually looks soo pretty and i get the sexy and bridal look all in one.

looking at the pics of your gown, something similar maybe possible. if you want all the layers altered your seamstress might have to lift the lace, add seams to make the gown more fitted and then reapply the lace by hand, which can be costly.

I would honestly get quotes on the price of alterations for this first. Sometimes, you can buy a sample dress for around the same price as alterations. I had custom alteration done on my dress and I hated the finished look so much, I went and bought a new dress. I could have saved so much money!

I agree maybe check off the rack or sample sales or David’s bridal and see if they have something in stock in the silhouette you’re looking for. (Your dress is gorgeous btw). Good luck!

Was your dress, by chance, purchased from David’s Bridal? I’ve read stories on here of brides being able to exchange dresses with DB. I think DB expects you to exchange for something of equal or greater price point so that they aren’t losing any money. Not sure if that’s still an option or if that’s changed with COVID. 🙁

OH wow! I just want to say I love your dress! Secondly I can see that a skilled seamstress would be able to alter it to a mermaid/trumpet. I think it will look gorgeous either way Smiley smile

I am seriously so happy you commented on this post! I looked at the pictures you posted and the shape it gives you is beautiful. I think once I get mine taken in I won’t want it to be mermaid! It seems like a lot doesn’t need to be taken in so I felt like it would still be poofy but maybe not! THANK YOU!

I'm actually trying to make mine poofier! I ordered a slip for it a few days ago. I thought I wanted mermaid, too, but it totally didn't look right on my body that way.
