Help-How to rid my kitchen of onion smell?

* Gin, on July 7, 2012 at 5:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

So the past few weeks when I come home I have noticed my house smells like onions. Even when I haven't cooked with them the days before. I have cleaned and scrubbed and somehow my house still had this lingering smell that wasn't there before. Well tonight as DH was searching for light bulbs, he opened a drawer that neither of us ever use. There's old cook books and a tiny crock pot in there. Well he found the onions! There was a bag of onions that was in that crock pot that were so old they busted and turned into this horrid onion juice. MY MOM was just here 2 months ago and totally reorganized my kitchen (I was mostly happy with) but she moved that bag of onions and put them in a drawer that I never use! So I never knew they were in there. Thank God they were sitting IN the small crock and we could just toss that whole thing. But how in the hell do I get rid of this onion smell? I didn't even know onions got old and busted like that?! EWWWW!

Baking soda. I think wash the pan with baking soda and vinegar and maybe the drawer. Then leave a small dish of baking soda out in your kitchen. It's amazing stuff! It totally absorbs odors. That's why so many people leave a thing of baking soda in their fridge to absorb all the odors from the foods that go in there (and in my case, go bad in there)!

Running ice and lemon rinds through your garbage disposal (if you have one) should help. There are pretty good Febreze air fresheners, or you might want to try pet odor eliminators - they are good at getting rid of much worse smells than onion.

Now that you have eliminated the source, the smell should dissipate over (hopefully not too much) time.
