Help - Horrible Helzberg Experience

Same, on September 27, 2018 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
I need some advice. Long story so I’ll make it as brief as possible-

My Fiancé and I went to Helzberg in May to look st rings. They called ME a couple times after that leaving voicemails wondering when we’d be coming in to buy it and about promos running. (Hell if I know... I’m not buying my own ring...). So I didn’t respond.

Fast forward to August. Fiancé goes in to buy the ring and all the paperwork for my
likes and size were “missing”. Luckily he remembered the size. He knew I wanted rose gold, diamond on the band, and a round diamond. That’s exactly what they sold him. And yay! It was in stock!! So they sold him a size 7 ring, and sized it down to a 5.5.

Last Saturday after having it for over a week, we went in to get it sized because it was falling off. Turns out
1) I am a size 5, not 5.5. And I remember the woman saying that.
2) the ring he purchased was a stock ring.in a 7. The woman Saturday told me she couldn’t size it any smaller and it should have never been sized below a 6 to begin with. I will begin to lose diamonds over time even as is.

So Fiancé was upset, I was in tears. They have to order me a new ring in a 5 and seemed to think it was crazy that I want my original diamond transferred to the new band, but they’d be happy to do it if I “like this one better than the new one.....” 😒 he told the woman who helped us Saturday that he would have ordered it in the right size to begin with and asked why they wouldn’t have told them that in the beginning. So my replacement engagement ring is on order :/

BUT WAIT. It gets better...

so last night while while we were talking about where we want to go for bands since we clearly don’t want to go there, he told me he showed them exactly what ring he wanted (and showed me the picture on his phone). The ring he WANTED to buy was a special order, higher quality gold, wider band with larger diamonds than my stock ring. Now don’t get me wrong, I do love my ring. But that just adds to the wtf of the experience.

He wanted to order a better ring and a larger diamond but managed to get talked into a stock ring that shouldn’t have been resized so small because he was told “it’s really the same thing... and you can have it to day!” And God love him, he really didn’t notice the differences.

So I guess my half question, half vent ... has this ever happened to you?
Should we cut and run and re purchase a ring else where?
Do you think we’ll aleays have problems with them?

His brother bought his wife’s ring from them 10 years ago and never had a problem. They offer twice-yearly inspections and free sizing. I’m sure some of that is the cath that t must be done every 6 months with your paper card and if you lose it your warranty is void.

Thoughts? Advice? I’m sad as it is that I’m going to lose my original band and I don’t know what to do. If I’d be better if with a whole new everything, I’d do that.

TIA

I would talk to management at the store. It seems like you had a sales hungry associate who sacrificed customer service & happiness for a quick sale. This is not right at all.

My ring is from helzburg and we have loved them. Never had an issue, same with FMIL, is there another store you can try and maybe that’s just a bad branch?? I’ve never heard of this with them!!

I thought about it. Especially after he told me he showed them a specific ring that comes in three different metal. When he said that, all I could think is “they commission when the item leaves the store, not when the orders is placed” which is still stupid. He would have spent an extra $4-500 on the other ring.

There is. But I’m wondering if because we ordered the replacement from this location, we have to take care of it at this location. I really kind of thought since Helzberg is a little pricey than others, the service would be a little better. Plus, his brother’s experience.

If you do choose to go in a new direction, I can't recommend shopping small business enough. Especially if you want better quality. Chains make their money from what they stock so they will always try to sell you that. Plus, the mom and pop shop will work with you to design exactly what you want.

My FH designed my engagement ring with our local jeweler whose shop is about the size of my pinky lol. When it came time to design my band, we went into a chain store to see if we could find something there and save some money. They had nothing to match so to custom make one it was $1000+ more than our local shop.

Our local shop also inspects, redips, etc. whenever you want them to.

My fiancé bought my ring at Helzberg and we’ve loved the experience. It was a ring that was in stock as a size 7 and they resized it down to a 4.5. I lost two small diamonds from the side of the band due to it being resized. They offered to create a new one in a 4.5 and moved the center stone over to the new ring with not even a hint of complaint. The inspections and service can be done at any location. I think it’s just a case of the sales person being way too aggressive. Definitely try working with a different Helzberg if you have multiple in your area.

Thanks Laurel. That makes me feel a little better. While the woman Saturday was nice, she also seemed instantly defensive as opposed to empathetic. Neither my fiancé or myself are confrontational people. We weren’t even getting angry, but you could surely tell he and I were upset and I needed Kleenex.

Wow, I'm so sorry. FH ordered my wedding band there, and it was also a size 5 with diamonds all over. I am pretty sure they ordered the new ring for us, so hopefully my diamonds won't fall out but I do have to take it back every 6 months to have it cleaned for the warranty.

Sorry to hear that! My rings are from Helzberg and we have loved the experience so far. Bought a bridal set and they resized it for me with no issues and the ring has stayed in great shape. Plus they clean it twice a year and redip it as many times as you would like. I would recommend trying a different location. Sounds like that particular one may just be bad customer service. Best of luck!

I lost the first side stone maybe a month after receiving it. They suggested that I not sleep in it since that can increase the likelihood of lost stones, but I never take this ring off except for a few minutes at home for various reasons. After I lost a second stone they were the ones to offer to make a new ring. I figured I’d give this one a shot since they had built up the platinum on the sides and I hoped that would help. Plus I wanted to talk to my fiancé first. I asked about moving the center stone over to the new ring rather than putting a new stone in and they almost seemed surprised like there wasn’t even a possibility of that not happening. I’m sorry you’ve been having such a rough time with it. Definitely give another location a chance though.

Can you get a refund for the ring? If yes, I'd run as fast as you can AWAY from that store and go somewhere else. I've never had good experiences with Kays or Zales or other chain stores. We got my ring at a local jewelry store with great reviews, it was such a better experience.
