Help! dried branch and fresh flower centerpieces

Kimberly, on April 28, 2018 at 2:20 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

My guest table centerpieces were supposed to be hydrangea + cork screw willow branches. Similar to the attached. However, I suddenly wondered if the branches would hold up in a water vase with the fresh flowers. The branches are dried I guess. Anyway so I did a test run with a small piece in water and it got completely saturated with water and mushy. Then I tried super glue on the bottom it case it was drawing up the center that way- everything below the waterline was saturated. Then I went to home depot, got wood sealer spray, and follows the directions to put 3 coats on a test piece. Again, completely saturated to water line. I don't know what to do. I have searched the web 100000 hours trying to figure it out but no matter the search terms I just get images and nonspecific info. What can I do? I'm willing to consider other branches or other ways to deal with the current branches. Would spray painting them silver or something effectively seal them? What kind of branches do people successfully put in water without this problem? I think the picture is curly willow, if I order that vs the corkscrew I have is curly willow always fresh/okay in/maybe even prefer water? HELP!

I'd ask your florist for advice, they will know how to do this.

Did they still stand up? Otherwise, does it matter if they get soft and water logged? No one will be touching them... Lol

I put branches in floral arrangements all the time without a second thought. They stand up fine.

Well I was testing a mini piece that broke off during shipping, like 6 inches. The whole branches are around 3 feet. But yeah you have a point lol. It LOOKED okay to me until I touched it. Like it didn’t disintegrate or crumble or something lol. And it even completely dried/recovered after I removed it from water. I guess the next step will be to put a whole branch in. Conveniently I have a vase of hydrangeas at home right now. I’ll add it and see how it goes 🤞🏼 I guess I didn’t do this sooner because I was worried about sacrificing a whole branch plus I didn’t have hydrangeas until I got some for my fiancé’s birthday. PS I feel obligated to say it’s not traditional to give men flowers but I thought they were pretty and it’s given me a test run in caring for hydrangeas.

Hi I’m DIY’ing the flowers. I enjoy stuff like this plus it is saving a lot of money. Hopefully it goes okay.

This is was my first post and afterward I found the DIY forum but I didn’t want to cross-post.

Hydrangea branch testHelp! dried branch and fresh flower centerpieces 2

Update: whole test branch in progress. These are not the same color hydrangeas, same amount of hydrangeas, same number of branches, same vase shape/height, etc as the centerpieces will be, this is just to test the branch stability.
