help Custom ring is not at all what i imagined

Valerie, on May 31, 2019 at 7:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 18
I’ve never posted on here, but I’m desperate for some advice if someone has some!
I recently got engaged and had my wedding ring made by a jeweler. I found her on Instagram and had followed her for a while to examine her work and style. I wasn’t planning on getting a custom ring until she added a stunning diamond to her shop. After getting engaged (he used just a band) I approached her about getting my dream ring with that specific stone. We exchanged many emails about the setting and I thought she understood my design ( a simple solitaire in a prong head setting, but a tapered band). She just sent me images of the final ring and it’s not what I had in mind.
1. I don’t like the prongs, they are not what we agreed on at all. I wanted dainty looking prongs, these look like claws.
2. The diamond is not in a print setting like I imagined. It lies flat against the finger and I can’t wear it flush with my other ring.
3. The taper looks nothing like the rendering she sent me, which I approved (because that’s what I wanted).

I need some advice how to properly address these issues. How do I ask for her to change all this? From what I know about structure of rings she probably will have to start all over with a new ring? I feel like I shouldn’t be charged for any of these changes because it’s not at all like the rendering.....

You’re right… She probably has to start over since it was custom. Did you show her photos? It’s pretty difficult to get a design point across simply via written words. I guess all you can do is inform her that the ring isn’t what you had in mind.

I think you explained it perfectly ! Just tell her exactly what you said in this forum.
Don't back down...you were very specific with what you wanted .
    Hold her to it.
    Good luck!

I did send her 3 pictures of a ring she made for someone else and said “I want this ring but with my stone.” I’m worried she will charge me more. My other option would be just deal with it and then eventually get it reset.

Thank you ladies for replying. I’m super shy about confrontation and I needed a little push to hold her to it. I have always been poor with communication too so I may not have been so clear in my design explanations.

Hey now! You were very clear...do not put the blame on yourself!(I do this too! ) I also hate confrontationSmiley smile but , in this instance you must take up for yourself!
Really, you said it so well here!
You have all of the points you want to make outlined.
    Send her an email tonight!
    You can do this.
Don't settle for less than what you want because you are nice...its not fair.
She didn't live up to her rendering you have the proof. Remind her of that . you can do this!!!
Nice , but firm. This is your life long ring we are talking about.
You can do this Smiley smile

No no no .... Do not deal with it.
Make her stick to her price quote and rendering. Don't settle!

I agree 100% with Anna. You clearly articulated what you wanted in this post, so I'm assuming you were descriptive with her. You approved a rendering that is not the look of the final product. You gave her pictures of what you wanted. She messed up. She needs to fix it, and it is not your responsibility to pay extra.

I never told her about my other ring. But I did send her two images of similar rings (with the same prong head setting). I just never explicitly stated that I wanted this setting and assumed she knew what I meant because she never questioned me about it. That’s why i feel like it was a lapse on my part.

I would still voice that this is not what you wanted. You are paying her money for a product, and the product is not as promised.

Ok, so how do I politely say good work but no it’s awful? Not at all like I wanted 😂

"Hello [insert name], thank you for all the hard work you put into this ring. However, I do have some concerns. The rendering you showed me has the tapered edges which I really liked, and the latest picture you sent looks like they are [describe what it looks like]. Also, the ring appears to be mounted flat rather than [describe the type of setting you wanted], which I need to ensure it sits flush with the wedding band... Is there a way these concerns can be adjusted? As of now, this does not match what we previously discussed." or something along those lines.

    This is perfect.
And yes confrontation sucks but you're a customer and she's a professional so it should be fine

No. stay firm, especially if you sent pictures. You commissioned an artwork, and had specific guidelines you had agreed on. If they are not met then she either needs to fix or issue a refund.

Update: I finally worked up the nerve to email her and of course, everything is fine now. She’s remaking the setting for me! She’s sent videos of each step of the process to see if I like it, and I do! Thanks ladies .
