Hi everyone. So I’m getting married in two weeks at the literal venue of my dreams.. huge winery and resort, vineyard.. it literally spooks like a castle, And if you’re from Atlanta you probably know what venue I’m talking about. So last night, I get a call from my wedding coordinator and she informs me that for the wedding, my bathrooms will be out of order and my guess will have to use a “executive level portable bathroom” I.e. a porta potty.
I have spent quite a bit of money on this venue, literally almost $20,000 for my guest to use a portable bathroom. I understandably was upset about this and contact them and let them know I was not only not OK with it, but I’m very upset that they didn’t let me know when I signed my contract that the bathroom will be going through a remodel during my wedding.
The contract states if the hotel or I have to change venues/times/facilities I’m entitled to receive $15,500. While I technically don’t have to change facilities; another ballroom was offered to me; plus I’m assured they’ll “try to make it right” by offering some sort of discount. My question to you fellow brides is WHAT WOULD YOU DO?! A ballroom kinda ruins my whole vision.. and I fear all the decor will look smushed in due to a way smaller room. Would you ask for all your money back?! Half? Would you take them to court?! Any advice would be helpful!

I would definitely go checkout the bathrooms they're offering before I moved locations.

Shoot. That’s tough. I am not every guest, but I would not be happy having to pop into any kind of portable restroom in a floor length gown. Then again, a recent black tie optional wedding I went to had traditional bathrooms that were a hot, hot mess because guests were not respectful and no one on staff ever checked the restrooms. 😂

Maybe ask a select few of your VIP guests what they would do if they were you? Good luck. I feel for you!

I would ask to see pictures of portable restrooms. My friend had ones similar to these screen shotted and people raved a lot about how nice they were. I would ask for some compensation but not change your dream venue

I would take the portable bathrooms. We had them at my sister's wedding and they are great! Have a regular sink, mirror, flushing toilet. They look like a trailer, not a regular porta-poty. I would ask however for some money back only because it is going to be a bit of an inconvenience to you and your guests. The thing to ask yourself is: is this fight for a new venue, more money back etc really worth losing your venue over bathrooms...

I would definitely request a partial refund. The toilets may be okay but they aren’t what you originally signed up for and put a deposit down on. I would also ensure that they have a covered path to the toilets because having guests walk in the rain to the bathroom was not part of the contact either. I wouldn’t change venues or spaces, that seems like too much of a hassle, but I do think they should compensate you for altering the venue and inconviencing you and guests.

I agree with what others have said regarding the quality of these bathrooms and you said you e actually seen them. It seems like the biggest issue is that your guests will have to walk outside. That is a bit of a bummer, but hopefully the weather is nice. Also, hopefully this is the biggest and only issue you’ll have with your wedding day. (Trying to look on the bright side!

As far as your contract, read it VERY closely. Most of them have a clause in their that the owners are at liberty to make whatever improvements, enhancements, and remodels they wish, at any time. If the bathrooms are out of service because of a remodel, they would be covered under that clause. Just something to consider before you get your hopes up of any type of reimbursement.

Portable bathrooms aren’t necessarily “gross” or “miserable” there are plenty that are nice enough that you’d have no idea you were in one. Just make sure it’s up to quality — but with a fancy venue, it seems like they’ll make sure to get the best they can. They’re roomy with electricity and running water and flushing toilets, and the only thing that sets them apart from a building bathroom is that they’re inside. I’d try to let this go as best you can and just roll with it. You can push for a discount which would be great but I don’t think you would win a court case or be entitled to the $15k plus refund. With a wedding 2 weeks away, I’d try not to doing anything to jeopardize the dream venue over a bathroom. I’d really try not to let this be a thing that ruins my day. I’d take the discount I could get and try to push toilets out of my mind.

You can try to get it back. However since you don’t technically have to change anything it may not happen. They may not have known about the bathroom remodel at the time you signed your contract. As far as your pictures they can avoid bathroom being in the shot.

    I's so sorry you're dealing with this... it's a nightmare... but I agree I wouldn't want a porta-potty at all!!

Girl! I’m right there with you! I haven’t heard back from them just yet; apparently the general manager and events are attempting to align accordingly and I’ll know today what they’re going to do to “soften the blow”
it is legit a nightmare. I’m actually surprised at how nonchalant people are on the matter; I was beginning to second guess my freak out.

Very true... sadly, it does say something like this in the contract right? And there is no way the bathrooms will be done in time? Honestly, I know it's probably the last thing you want to hear right now or need to deal with but can you talk briefly to a lawyer to see if you can get all your money back even with the contract? They never mentioned remodeling as a possibility right? So they sold you the venue fully knowing that it wasn't totally what you were going to get. And a suitable alternative can be up to interpretation because in my book, a porta-potty is NOT a suitable alternative...

I would ask for a major discount... I can't believe you are paying $20,000 for a venue for your guests to have to walk outside to use the bathroom.

I agree with this. offering to comp your champiaign toast when it’s already included is just ridiculous (honestly it would be ridiculous to just offer that even if it wasn’t included). I would start posting negative reviews if they push back on you at all.

Does the contract specify restrooms are available?

I would def ask about the discounts, I personally think that 50% is rather high ( I could be wrong) for them to agree to give back to you seeing as though you rented that space for your wedding not for their bathrooms ( if you get where I am coming from). I do believe that you should be entitled to a nice discount as you stated your guest shouldn't have to walk outside to get to a bathroom, God forbid the weather is bad that would be terrible. Read your contract good see if there are any loop holes that you may be missing. If there discounts are not reasonable maybe consider looking at their other spaces if you were able to make them work. But I def remind them you did not disclose this to me upon signing our agreement, maybe they thought it would be done in time but either way that is their fault and they need to make it right for you....

Finding a new venue in 2 weeks will be close to impossible. I would contact the venue and see if you are able to go and see for yourself what the temporary bathrooms will look like and go from there. No, it is not the perfect solution but don't let your special day go down the toilet (see what I did there Smiley winking ) until you can see the facilities. I am unsure what executive level portable bathrooms are but I have seen some in trailers that have sinks, stalls, even vanity areas and are rather fancy for a portable toilet. I would take their offer for a discount and agree they should have told you up front but try not to stress out too much. It is beyond your control. Good luck and i'm sorry this is happening, I know it sucks. I hope everything works out!
