Help! Botched Alterations - Visible Seam

Heather, on May 16, 2019 at 7:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Help! I picked up my wedding dress after alterations were completed last weekend and was shocked by what I saw in the mirror when I tried it on at the salon. In order to hem the dress by about 2 inches, the seamstress cut at the knee instead of at the hem in order to retain the scalloped edge. I did not question this approach as I assumed this must be a standard practice that works just fine or she would not have suggested it. She assured me the lace would be brought back over the seam to cover the cut. So I agreed to this approach and signed the waiver to allow the dress to be cut. However, as you can see in the below photos, the seam is VERY visible and the shape of the dress has changed from A line to almost mermaid. The seamstress thought it looked great and said it's what we agreed to, but I was shocked. But I thought maybe I'm overreacting so I took the dress home, put it back on, and sent pictures to my sister. She told me she couldn't see what I was talking about at first until I sent her the photo of the sample dress I tried on. Then she could see how much it has changed. So I immediately started searching for a seamstress who could fix it, and I feel very hopeful and even confident that I have. She got me in within a couple of hours, showed me example gowns she had just finished, explained all the flaws with mine and what she would do to fix it, and agreed to fix it in time for my wedding which is 3 weeks away. The reason I am posting now is I would like to find out if others have had this same issue and if they were able to fix the dress and not have to go and buy a new one. Please post if you have had this happen!

I can’t answer your question, but I’m so sorry and I hope the second seamstress can fix it for you! I definitely see what you mean about the seam and how much it changed the shape of the dress. Your dress is beautiful and you look beautiful in it, but you should definitely have what you want and paid for. I will definitely be keeping scalloped edges in mind as I dress shop since I’m short and will definitely need fairly significant hemming. Good luck!

I don’t have any similar experiences but holy moly. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, I can’t even imagine. I hope it can be fixed! I would be writing tons of reviews on the original seamstress.

Yikes! I don’t have any advice and haven’t been through this, but I can’t believe what she did to your dress! That seam totally changes the silhouette. I really hope the new seamstress can fix it for you. Keep us updated!

Wow that is awful! Best wishes with new seamstress. I also had to have a second seamstress fix my dress. I wanted the back of my dress lowered and removed for a more open back. The seamstress folded about an inch or more of material into itself and then sewed over it. She also just tucked the zipper in and sewed over it! She also shortened my straps but didn't move the cups so it looked like my boobs were in my shoulders. 😂 It looked like what my aunt who kinda sews would have done, not a woman in business for 30 years. I'm sure this new seamstress will help you get the dress you're supposed to have!

I mean your dress is beautiful even after alterations but as you said you can clearly see the seam?! It seems like she tried to skip corners in cutting where she did. If I were you I would call the shop immediately and tell them they need to fix it or replace it. Make sure you speak to either a manager or the shop owner!

Yikes. She completely made it look like a different type of dress! So glad you found someone else who can fix it! I would 100% be asking for a refund from the first seamstress, since now you’re paying extra to fix her mistake.

I’m so sorry! Honestly though, from just looking at the first picture I wasn’t even sure what you were talking about bc the seam just makes it look like a mermaid gown! After looking at the before pictures I see what you mean, the seam is extremely obvious. I hope you can get it fixed but it really still looks great and I bet most people won’t even realize it’s a mistake!

I agree with Grace. I see what you’re saying but only because you showed the picture of the before. It is very beautiful both ways and no one is looking at it like you are. Do whatever makes your heart happy. Sorry and good luck!

She cut your dress into two peices because she doesn't know how to do a scalloped edge.

    Holy f I'd be livid.

What's that saying? "you'd look good in a potato sack" you look lovely in it, but she did ruin your dress.

I don't have advice on whether you can fix that or not. Keep us updated.

I am so sorry this happened! And I'm so glad you've found a better seamstress to fix it.

It's not really the same at all, but I also thought I should trust a seamstress who had great Yelp reviews and decades of experience, even though she was telling me things about my dress that didn't seem right. But in my case I told friends and family about my concerns and they all told me to go back and get my dress and take it to another seamstress. The second one was immediately so much more professional and competent, so I really dodged a bullet.

Good seamstresses really can work miracles so I have hope yours can be fixed!

Here is an update: The new seamstress I found has been able to fix my dress!!! I am so relieved and happy! See photos below. She was able to get rid of the very visible seam, as well as tighten my straps and fix my bustle. But the seam was the big problem. You can see the difference in the before and after. If you look very closely and know what happened, you can still tell that there is one. But that is to be expected. I am extremely happy with the results. And it is not finished yet. She is going to let it out even more at my fingertips so that it has less of a flair shape or more of a straight line like the original dress. And then once it's steamed it should look even better. I now just need to get some good Spanx so my belly area doesn't look so unflattering! But it actually looks much better in person, so I am going to speak to my photographer about this, because it definitely doesn't look as good in iPhone photos, but hopefully that's not the case with professional photos.

I am curious if anyone can see now why she didn't cut at the hem instead? Does the scalloped edge and lace pattern above explain that? (I forgot to ask the new seamstress. I plan to ask next time I go back to pick up the final dress.)
