Help! April Wedding - What do i do with bad alterations and my wedding dress!

Stacey, on January 19, 2021 at 2:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I'm trying not to panic, but.... Our wedding was rescheduled from last April 2020 to this April 2021 due to Covid. In a nutshell, I love my dress however I just recently tried it back on and realized how bad the alterations were - the dress currently doesn't fit. I weigh the same, however my body mustlve put on pounds differently. It's too small in the wrong places and the seamstress CUT OFF the lace bottom that I I asked to be "hemmed". I didn't notice the missing lace becuase I picked up my dress in its garment bag when he world shut down and didn't look. I just made an alteration appointment for this coming Saturday with someone new, but now I don't know if 1) I still like the dress, 2) I'm bigger than I was a year ago, can the old alterations be un-done? and 3) the lace bottom .. UGGHH! Can it be put back on?!

My pics are on my phone, and I'm frantically typing from work. For reference, I have the Kitty Chen Danielle dress.

PLEASE help. I need advice... my co-workers are telling me I need to buy a new dress ASAP. Do I?? Should I??

It’s hard to determine what your decision should be without looking at photos of your dress. Seeing what exactly was cut off during alterations may help us help you. If you can try to post your dress as comments later! 🙂
But based on what you’re saying, trying to put the lace back on if it’s been cut off instead of hemmed may not be possible.

Oh yeah I can see what she did with the lace on the bottom.. I don’t think it would be possible to add it back on for it to look like the original dress.. I would go to a different seamstress and ask if they would be able to put it back on somehow, if she saved the lace and can attach it back on. Otherwise I don’t see this dress being saved if you really want that lace back on.. sorry 😕

Ouch! Sorry op. The dress isn’t the same with the lace anymore. However, you still can find lace trim and attach it. It won’t be the same, but at least not a straight lace cut.

Most seamstresses don't cut off excess fabric when it's been taken in so the fabric should still be there to be let out. My wedding was supposed to be April 2020 also and my dress also doesn't fit now. My seamstress assured me that she NEVER cuts excess fabric and she can let it out if she needs to.

First off, I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience with alterations. That sucks. Here's the good news; the hem is fixable. I worked in bridal for three years, and what we would typically do to hem a dress like yours is take off the intricate lace trim at the bottom, hem the dress, and then reattach the trim lace. It looks like your seamstress skipped that last step. I would definitely get in touch to see if she still has your trim lace- if she does, great, easy fix. If she doesn't, I would get in touch with to store where you purchased your dress; many dress brands will sell that kind of lace separately to attach a plain veil or extend a train. It's very likely that they could order you more of that lace and then you'd be able to go the hem fixed. However, I can't really speak to the other alteration issues without more detailed pictures, and if you're unsure if you love this dress and it's in your budget, you might want to consider looking for a new one. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
