Help! Addressing Invitations to Military

rlg510, on April 13, 2011 at 8:51 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

I have read so many different conflicting ways to address invitations to military.

I have the following mix

Retired Navy Warrant Officer (W05)

Retired Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9)

Retired Navy Captain (O-6)

Active Navy Captain (O-6)

Retired Navy Commander (O-5)

Retired Air Force Colonel (O-6)

How do I address their invitations?

My FH is a Chief in the Navy (E-7). All his mail for things like this comes as (example) Chief Matt Smith. I am not sure if it would change anything for being retired. Or just address them as their regular names. (That is what we did for our invites).

I was taught (old fashion etiquette) that they had to at least be a commisioned officer of Lieutenant Colonel (Army, Air Force, Marine Corps) or Commander (Navy) before they kept their rank. That made sense because those officers had the extra leafing ("scrambled eggs") on their hats. Everybody below those ranks used civilian titles after they retire. But, when I went to verify that is how to do it, I've been seeing even enlisted ranks using titles.

If you are enlisted and have a higher rant (E7, E8, or E9) you use the title.

That is what I was told and tried googling it for you and saw it listed a bunch of different ways. Sorry I could not be more help.
