Has anyone had a reception that had heavy hors d'oeuvres & drinks instead of dinner? Did it save you money? Regrets? Advice?

My expectation would be that there are other rude things to come.

Also usually requires more staff if you do it that way, which is where the added cost also come in

If she talks this way to people in real life, we don't have to worry about her guests. None will come anyway.

ETA: Typo, OP may be rude as fuck but shes on top of the grammar.

If your reception is at dinner time, people with expect food, whether you care what they expect or not. You wouldn't invite friends over during dinner time and then say 'Here's a bowl of chips and salsa', no?

We thought about having heavy apps (for a afternoon wedding), but then the price was higher as other PP mentioned because it's actually much more work to prepare small things and put it on small plates/ skewers etc than to just cook a big bowl of pasta and put it on a warming tray. You might save on the silverware / plates etc, but in the long run, you will probably spend more.

Honestly, wedding food is usually terrible and the pre-dinner apps are the only good part so I would be thrilled to attend a reception like this. I went to one that started at 3-ish and it was great. They also had a dessert buffet.

I've been to a RD that was heavy hors doeuvres and a sushi station. It was a good time, but shorter than a whole wedding reception.

At my venue this would definitely be more expensive than a plated meal (which includes one hour of hors doevres, salad, entree, and ice cream), depends on the venue/caterer though.

There's nothing wrong with a heavy hors d'oeurves wedding if it's done at the right time. Who doesn't love appetizers?

What's wrong here is OP's attitude toward the people she has invited to celebrate with her.

I usually try to be nice on here and state opinions in a non offensive way, but honestly, why are you inviting guests? If you don't care what they expect, then you shouldn't expect them to be there. I wouldn't want to be at someone's wedding who was so careless about others.

What? Heavy apps (can't spell the French word) usually equates to the same amount of food as a dinner, if not more. It is usually more expensive too. It is not the same as a cheese display and a few passed apps. It is not a low budget wedding plan. We wanted a cocktail reception and it was a lot more $$. We may do a cocktail rehearsal dinner so we can still get that experience with a smaller guest list.

If you dont care about your guests, you might as well have a cash bar and a potluck.

    fuck it, amirite?

@Kelsey, I snorted in my water because I was laughing at your comment.

Let's throw in a dollar dance and a sprinkle of a Honeyfund too!

I'm not sure why you are hosting a reception if you don't care what your guests think?

However, I've been to an appetizer only reception and it was lovely. There was a crazy amount of food though...which there has to be when you are serving booze. My friend had circulating apps that never ended, 4 stations (poutine, nachos, burger bar & ice cream) as well as the biggest sushi bar ever. Nobody left hungry. She did have a later ceremony/reception and noted on the invite it was a cocktail reception so most people had eaten dinner already. She paid an arm and a leg for it but it was amazing.

It did not save us money, nor do we have regrets. We loved our reception!
