Heavy (almost) Strapless Dress

Michelle, on March 8, 2020 at 1:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Help! I purchased my dress months ago, and loved it, even though it was too big. It is pretty much strapless, with teeny tiny round “straps” that are more for decoration than function.
After having the dress altered to the correct size in the trunk area, the straps are digging into my shoulders, making it apparent that the dress is slipping down. My seamstress thinks it is because it is too heavy.
The dress has an extremely low back, so to avoid having to wear an awkward strapless bra, I had actual bra cups sewn into the dress.I’m beginning to second-guess the dress I chose, and my seamstress has no suggestions as to remedy the situation. My wedding is 62 days away, so time is of the essence! Please don’t tell me “if it fits correctly, it won’t slip”, because I have this problem with EVERY strapless dress. I’ve always believed it was because my chest is significantly larger than my waist.Someone please help!

Are there a lot of layers to the dress? Would you be willing to cut some out? Yes, with a low back dress like that the straps are going to take the brunt of the weight. You could try taking some layers out of the dress and replacing with a slip instead. But that is a bit costly and potentially risky if you don’t like the shape or the dress post alterations. Or you could try replacing with a thicker strap, though it maybe be difficult to drink a strap to match at this point and it may significantly change the look of the dress.

If the dress is slipping down, I'd wonder if it's tight enough? Even in a strapless dress, the structure & tightness of the bodice is what keeps the dress up where it belongs. If it's purely the weight and the dress is already as tight as it can reasonably be, then like others suggested I'd talk with your seamstress about the possibility of removing any of the weight from the skirt and/or adding more substantial straps. It sounds like daughter's dress was fairly similar to yours -- big, full, multi-layer skirt, a pretty much backless bodice, and very thin jeweled straps that were really just decoration. For her the issue was that the bodice wasn't tight enough. The seamstress also added a thin, nude-color underlining to the straps because they were both digging in to her shoulders & the beading was so irritating her shoulders would turn bright red after wearing her dress just for a few minutes. Both adjustments worked to correct all the issues. Good luck!

I think the challenge here is the low back. If you have a small waist, ample bust, and hips that are larger than your waist, and the dress is correctly fitted to your waist then it shouldn't slip because the dress should "stop" at the point where your hips get wider than your waist. If you happen to be very triangle shaped, and have hips that are smaller than your waist, then the dress might continue to slip. With a low back, there isn't a way to cinch up the waist in the same way there would be if there is more fabric.

Is it possible the straps are just too short? For a dress with "non functional" straps like you describe the dress really shouldn't require the straps to stay on at all and should just sit in place how it is supposed to.

I think you'll likely either need to add substance to the straps, add material around the back (to make the torso area more structured), or remove weight from the dress somehow.

I’m a plus gal and didn’t want strapless for same reason-I didn’t want to be yanking it up all day. My seamstress is moving straps more to center, and making a little longer. But the bodice is snug as well. Have the seamstress work on it a bit.
