Health insurance & name change

Savannah, on January 17, 2021 at 3:36 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18
Hello! I’m getting married on 05/22/2021 and my mom told me that I shouldn’t change my last name until after I turn 26 (which is in a few years) or the health insurance won’t cover me. It doesn’t sound correct so I’m just here to ask everyone’s opinion and see if anyone knows if I can remain on my parents insurance after I get married and change my last name or if I’ll be forced to keep my maiden name if I wish to remain on my parents insurance?

Call your insurer? That way you’ll get accurate information directly from the source.

All insurance companies are different. This sounds like a weird rule, but the only way to know for sure if it’s accurate is to call your specific provider.

I believe in general you are not able to remain on your parents insurance at all if you are married. It doesn’t matter if you change your name or not

So I’m 25, I’m now on my husbands insurance, and due to the Obamacare I am still active on my moms insurance until my birthday in May. Hope that helps!

I would read your insurance policy or contact them for clarification.

I believe that once you get married you're unable to remain on their health insurance.

Contact the insurance company & make sure you get the person’s name & initial of their last name. I work at a hospital & deal with insurances everyday- I’ve never heard of them dropping you because you get married. As long as your a full time student, you should still get coverage.

You are absolutely able to stay on your parents insurance until 26, even if you’re married.
But it is a good point about the name change, I actually forgot about that. You’ll just need to update that with them. It is always a good idea to double check this with your insurance company though so give them a call!

She probably is thinking that her plan does not allow for married children and that they won’t find out if you don’t change your name.
That logic is flawed - for quite a while after you change your name there will be paperwork that will have your old name on it - chances are your drs office would file it under your old name if you never tell them.
BUT insurance companies really don’t like to pay, so you run the risk of a big mess with fraud if they find out you are married and they don’t cover married children.

Call your insurance company. For me specifically, that is true. However I turn 26 this year anyway so it's not a big deal for me.

Also most insurance companies won't keep you after your married since you're legally independent. So you may get dropped anyway because you're married.

Hi! I see it's been a while, but I would like to chime in. It's essential to review the terms of your parents' insurance policy to determine whether there are any restrictions on coverage for married individuals or those who have changed their last names.

Most insurance plans allow dependents to remain on the policy until they turn 26, regardless of their marital status or name change (it's also the same for me, as I use insurance from ibgportland.com ). However, checking with the insurance provider is better to ensure you'll still be covered after changing your name. Congrats on your upcoming wedding, and I hope this helps!
