Head table - does it matter what side brides and maids, groom and men sit?

FutureStephD, on February 5, 2019 at 8:32 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
Hi all,

We’re doing a head table and I’m curious if it matters what “side” we place ourselves and our party. I don’t think it does, but correct me if I’m wrong. Which “side” would be for the bride and bridesmaids, which side is for groom and groomsmen (blue or yellow in the diagram)?

Thanks,
Steph

PS I know a lot of people hate head tables, including myself, but FH wanted two things (head table and to wear a green tie), so trust me, there’s no changing or negotiating on this!

I have only been to one wedding with a head table and the blue side in your picture was the groom, and yellow was the bride.

The one I've been to (that i remember anyway) had the bride and bridesmaids on the yellow side.
Conveniently I always like being on FHs right side for some reason Haha.

I agree with this! Yellow side is traditionally the bride, but I really don't think it matters too much.

Agree with Kristen. I was in a wedding once with a head table and the bridesmaids sat on the yellow side. That's the only wedding I've been to with a head table though. I have to say that their plus ones were a little upset they couldn't sit with them but that's the issue with head tables.

There’s no right way, we did groomsmen on the left and bridesmaids on the right so it lined up with our Mr & Mrs sign. Also consider a kings table, allowing the wedding party dates to sit with them up at the head table. That’s what we did and it was a blast.

    Thanks!

I’ve actually only HEARD about it from one wife of a groomsman. Everyone else knows and has just said ok.

    Super cute!!

Yes, I tried to pitch the Kingstable idea and FH threw a mantrum over the thought of it. Which only dwarfed the mantrum over getting rid of the head table all together 😂 (I kid. Kinda.)

We’ve agreed on everything but this and flowers (he didn’t want any) so our compromise is I get allllll the flowers and he gets the head table.

I agree, bridesmaids traditionally on the yellow side.

However, I did go to a wedding that had a very large bridal party (15 on each side) and they sat them on both sides, paired with their partner they walked down the aisle with.

Most weddings I have been to have the bride's side on the yellow side. When you are facing it, it matches how most couples stand at the alter. Bride on left, groom on right. You are welcome to do whatever you want though! I don't think there is a specific rule.

I mixed mine up. H and I picked our bridal parties together (he had one of my best friends as a gm, I had his sisters as bms, ushers were mutual friends) so I sat his sisters on his side, my friend on my side, and usher near ppl they knew. It wasn't split up into bms/gms separately and it seemed like ppl had a good time!

So the wedding I most recently went to had an L shaped head table in the front corner of the room. The bride and groom sat in the middle the girls were on her side and boys on his end. They sat the same way they stood at the alter, girls to the left and boys to the right.

We will be doing a head table with the dates of our party being able to sit with them. We are also allowing our party to sit with each other as we have three married couples walking.

That's great! How many people do you have standing up total and how many will sit at the head table?

Thanks everyone! Yellow = bride, blue = groom. That actually works out wonderfully b/c then my dad can sit at the "head" of the super long table right next to it and he will feel special there/

    I appreciate all the help!

We have 13 total plus us. We will be in the middle. There will be 3 married couples and then my maid of honor her date the best man his date and then a bridesmaid with her husband and an additional groomsman.

At my wedding, I had the bridesmaids sit on my side and the groomsmen sit on the groom's side. I was on blue side and the groom was on the yellow side mostly because we had a Mr&Mrs sign that we put up that would look funny if it was reversed, lol. I think traditionally the groomsmen sat on the bride's side and the bridesmaids sat on the groom's side with while you're looking at the head table the groom is on the right and the bride is on the left.
