Hawaiian casual dress code?

M2H, on August 9, 2013 at 10:33 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

What does this mean? I have to go to a reception tomorrow for a friend that just got married in HI. They did the ceremony just them and then will be throwing a reception for close friends and family.

I can only think that it means beach type clothes? Like a maxi dress? I don't wear bright colors basically nothing but red, black and white(sometimes) so this is super hard to figure out lol.

Help please!

Even a casual wedding means a dress to me.

Your wardrobe rainbow sounds a whole lot like mine. I feel like you can ever go wrong with black at a wedding, but red's a fun color to wear.

Yeah I'd feel weird not wearing a dress. But them my FH? Like a Hawaiian shirt and shorts? I'm so confused lol.

You could do beach-wear or tropical attire. For the man, that may mean shorts an an Aloha Shirt. For ladies, a tropical dress, long or short. Being on the mainland you could also do shorts and a tropical shirt.

    Here is an example.

I'd be dead before I'd be seen with FH in a Hawaiian shirt. Khakis and a white shirt for him, maybe?? Khakis and something.

Having been to Hawaii many, many times, trust me, Alohas shirts are so normal. At a Hawaiian themed event, they will fit in.

Beach attire works, if one does not want to do Aloha.

    Light and flowy!

For the guys - khakis and a short sleeve polo or button down (also non restrictive)

    wth - triple post!

FH REFUSES to wear Hawaiian shirts. A button up (long or short sleeve) with khakis will be fine.

You are probably at the reception already but for future reference....but I'm going to translate mainland "Hawaiian casual" as what we in Hawaii mean by "Aloha attire" for women it means a tasteful comfortable dress with a print (usually flowers) or color- no spaghetti straps. For men, aloha shirt or collared shirt and black or khaki pants. The aloha shirts and dresses people really wear here are very different from the loud and cheap tourist shop nonsense people think of as aloha shirts. Have a great time!!!

Thanks for all the input and especially the picture. FH is easy he said no polo so that decided what he's wearing lol

I'm still lost for me though. Miranda so you're saying no spaghetti straps? I totally have a cute flowy polka dot dress that's spaghetti. And a nice beach dress that's strapless. I was thinking either of those but they're both black and white so I feel like I'd look way out of place or stand out too much. I over think things.

I just tell myself it's better to be over-dressed than under. I imagine others are having the same struggles you are though.

I hope I'm not the only one. But yeah your right about rather being overdressed. That's usually me lol

I even had FH ask the groom and he said i sbould wear a bikini ha. Then he just kept repeating "Hawaii stuff"

I'm sure this is probably a silly question having met you, but do you have anything with a floral-y print?

I would think a maxi dress or peasant skirt w/cute tshirt kind of top would work. Find one of those red things in your wardrobe instead of the black and white stuff Smiley smile

Sorry I didnt reply sooner. I am sure whatever you ended up wearing looked great! One time I went to a wedding on the mainland where it was aloha attire and a lady showed up in a bikini top and sarong. And she was like 10 months preggo. Yikes! So, I'm sure you rocked in whatever you ended up wearing.

I'm seeing muumuus and Hawaiian shirts lol but I'd just wear something summery -- like a maxi dress. For your FH I would agree with Paris. I definitely wouldn't actually make him wear a Hawaiian shirt, unless that is his style.

Thank yo so much ladies. You really helped. Especially you Paris! The whole better to overdress really helped with FH, he wanted to go in a tank top and cut off shorts so i made him take a back up which he changed into in the car before going in lol.

Apparently everyone else had the dress code down except the bride's brother who showed up in a suit, like practically black tie and his wife in a black long dress almost like a gown.

Kristn, i ended up just buying a beach dress with black and white polka dots. It was still very fitting for the theme and still so me so i was still comfortable.

Ladies: Slacks and blouse or dress shorts, casual dresses/ maxi dresses, skirts or Aloha evening wear, etc. Gentlemen: Slacks, Dress shorts, polo/knit/dress shirt, or Aloha attire. Jackets are not required, but you may wear one if you choose. Ties are seldom seen in Hawaii, but again, you may wear one if you choose Checkout the best Hawaiian dress plus size here.
