Hawaii - Oahu vs Maui

Farah, on September 4, 2016 at 1:11 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 18

We are going to Hawaii for 10 days but one day will be spent flying there and one day flying back (we live on the east coast). I can't decide if we should do all 8 days on either Oahu or Maui or if we should split our time and do 4 days on each.

Do 4 of each, they might offer different insights of Hawaiian culture

Maui. Oahu is my least favorite island though. Kauai, the Big Island, and Maui are my top three. Really depends on what type of island vacation you want. Before you decide to fly between look at flight times. You could end up spending more time traveling than you would like and may be surprised at how costly it is.

Don't jump islands, it ends up being to much traveling. I've only been to Maui and Kauai and both are amazing.

I'm at the airport right now!

We did Maui for our honeymoon. I loved it so much!

We had 5 nights here and that was a good amount of time. We rented a car so we could easily get everywhere.

We watched the sunset at the top of the inactive volcano. We snorkeled with green sea turtles and colorful fish. We sat on a black sand beach. Watched the sunset on our hotels beach. Poke was great! We saw bamboo gardens and went to Iao national park.

    I highly recommend it! :3

Here's some of the turtles we snorkeled with resting on the beach.

I vote Maui too. I have not been to Oahu, but we've been to Maui twice, Kauai, and we did the Big Island for our honeymoon. Oahu (Honolulu specifically) is very over crowded. Everything I've heard about Honolulu is that the traffic is horrible. I know Pearl Harbor would be cool to see and I'm sure Waikiki is awesome but unless you are really looking for serious night-life (clubs, dancing, etc) Maui will give you a great taste of Hawaii without all the traffic. Kaanapali, Lahaina, and Kihei are all awesome. Also, I think Maui has some of the best, and easiest to access, beaches on any of the islands. (Kauai has awesome beaches but many of them are hard to get to- require a lot of hiking or very limited parking once you are there.)

Just some perspective; Oahu is one of the smallest of the Hawaiian Islands (at least of the ones you can actually visit) and has nearly 1,000,000 people. Maui is larger than Oahu and only has a population of about 150,000.

Oahu is okay but I hear Maui is great. I went to Oahu and it was nice but reminded me of another us city. Pearl Harbor is nice. Split between both islands

I'm an O'ahu native, and my vote is to go to Maui.

O'ahu is great (as long as you get out of Waikiki - it's way too overcrowded), but Maui is much more serene and picturesque. There's a good balance of activities for people who like to be on the go and sightsee, and for those who'd rather lay out on a beach all day.

Best spots (other than a beach) IMO: Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm in Kula or Maui Wine in Ulupalakua.

I would pass on Oahu for a honeymoon. Just came back from Kauai for the second time and loved how peaceful and relaxing it was. Maui is good for a honeymoon, beautiful and great snorkeling for hawaii.

I can't compare, but I am loving Oahu. We're in the middle of our 10 days here and it's amazing! We're staying on the quieter end of Waikiki and will be spending the last few days on the North Shore. I think it depends on what you want to do. We like a balance so we've spent half of each day relaxing on the beach, and half off doing something adventurous. Waikiki is definitely crowded, especially if you stay further down the strip. We go out of our way to experience more local hot spots than tourist ones which gives a totally different feel too.

Maui!!! It's all the beauty of Hawaii without the crowds, and there is such a wide range of things to do! My fiancé and I went there in May and it was laid back, but plenty to do and we did everything from Snorkel, to hike to swimming holes, find black sand beaches in Hana and surfing as well as just relaxing at the beach and pool! We LOVED it! I've been to Hawaii 4 times and Maui is my favorite by a long shot Smiley smile

Kauai is absoltely gorgeous! It's the oldest island, so the plant life literally takes over the island and all you see is green. I went ziplinig while there a few years ago and the views were incredible, and they have an old sugar cane irrigation canal that you can tube down, kinda like a lazy river which is such an experience. I 100% plan on honeymooning in Hawaii, there's a lot to do and at the same time so many beaches to relax on and do nothing.

I'm going to Oahu in 2 weeks! We wanted a mix of things to do. I can't lay on a beach all day, or go snorkeling. It just does not appeal to me. Oahu has a lot of things to do. Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Diamond Head, Bishop Museum, Dole Plantation... The traffic will probably be horrible, but worth it. It all depends on what you want out of your honeymoon. My fiance would prefer to lay on a beach all day, so I feel like Oahu will give us both.. I hope?? lol Going in blind with a positive attitude

We just got back from Hawaii from our own honeymoon. We did two days on Oahu, 5 on Kauai and 5 on Maui. I would highly recommend Maui over Oahu if you want a more relaxing honeymoon. Oahu is very built up and you do not get the real beauty of being in Hawaii. I did everything that spicykarlii did in Kauai. No matter where you go, go snorkeling especially in the morning! It is absolutely AMAZING and was our favorite thing to do on our honeymoon!
