Having two caterers??

Jpbride2B, on March 25, 2019 at 3:25 PM Posted in Planning 1 12

So, my FH is Haitian and wants to incorporate Haitian food into our wedding dinner menu. I am COMPLETELY fine with this, only that would only be one entree and one side dish option in the menu and I've already been in the process of solidifying a traditional American full-service caterer.

Would it be absolutely crazy to have on caterer make the Haitian food and one make the traditional American, but have the one that is full service, serve and plate all the dishes?

Could you do the Haitian food during cocktail hour as appetizers?

If you could get them to agree to do that, I don't think it would be crazy. But, I know in my catering contract there were clauses that talked about how they were the only caterer and only ones able to provide food. Unfortunately food comes with liability do they didn't want food illness to get pinned on them.

I don’t think it’d be crazy. But I’d double check with the caterer you already have. My caterer stated in the contract that they are to be the only ones serving food other than cake & bar service.

    This.

We had two cakes being brought in from different locations. While they didn't tell us we couldn't, they were not thrilled and let us know that if someone got sick off cake they could not be held liable.

As others have mentioned, I would check your contract to make sure it's allowed, but otherwise, I don't see a problem with this. I was recently at a wedding where they had southern BBQ to represent the bride and Indian food to represent the groom. The BBQ caterer was the main caterer and was there to serve and clean up. The Indian restaurant just dropped off the food and then left.

I would ask the caterers, some have in their contracts they are the only caterer. I'm not sure one caterer would want to plate & serve the other food. Maybe have the Haitian caterer (if the other caterer allows them there) make appetizers or desserts rather than mixing entrees?

I'm Haitian and FH is American lol. We choose an all inclusive venue that has a set menu that we have to choose from. So my family is planning and making all the Haitian food for the rehearsal dinner the day before. This was the only way we would be able to have any type of Haitian food in the mix.

Sorry I'm back lol. Did you already pay your full service caterer? Maybe you can just go with a Haitian caterer. We know how to make more than Haitian food lol.

Hi! Did you decide to have one caterer or two? Did you hire both already? How are they going to work together?

Wow this is my same exact dilemma my fiancé is Haitian and my family are black American and my fiancé wanted to have food to represent his culture and for his family to be familiar with. But we had no idea about liability issues with the caterers. We will definitely be contacting the caterers to ask about this. This was very helpful for me.

Hey, this is something I will be dealing with next year. My FH is Jamaican, I'm Nigerian (something I just found out) but have been identifying as Black American my whole life including my family (no big deal). His family will be traveling from Jamaica to the states so I will be incorporating both American and Jamaican food. I actually have 4 caterers!!! Yes, I know 4. Why so many? No one place had everything unfortunately. I am ordering majority from one Jamaican spot, the American dishes are coming from 1 catering company but then there are important dishes on his side that I couldn't leave out that will be coming from the other 2 restaurants. I just want everyone comfortable especially my in laws. The pricing isn't crazy because, instead of selecting "wedding catering" for all the places were helpful in having me choose from their regular menus. This saved on extra fees. Also, the American restaurant had me opt in for pick up instead of delivery to save money as well. I have servers included in the venue package, so each caterer will just come set up and leave. I was upfront with each so it's not akward the day of; seeing other restaurants food, lol. I don't know if it would be a problem but everyone was cool with it. I also have 2 bakers because some of my wedding party is allergic to nuts and gluten so I'm doing special cupcakes and treats that everyone can enjoy without worrying but my wedding cake will be made with whatever. So basically to answer your question it's fine to have multiple just check with your venue. My venue just stated all caterers have to be licensed but they are more than welcome to service our big day and the only thing not allowed is outside liquor so we have to use their packages which is fine. I hope this helps.
