Having Second Thoughts About My Dress....

Amber, on October 30, 2020 at 3:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I got super excited right after I got engaged, and even though our wedding was just over a year and a half away, I immediately wanted to look at dresses. By the time I picked my dress, mostly because nothing I was really drawn to was something I could realistically afford or they didn't have it for me to try on and I didn't want to be super disappointed by a no return policy, I wound up just picking one of the dresses that I thought I liked. Now, I'm regretting it and wishing that I had waited in hopes I would've found something that really caught my eye. Has anyone else been in this position and what did you do?

Does the boutique have a return or exchange policy? I would call them to schedule another appointment if you are at least able to exchange it.

Unfortunately not. They don't allow any returns or exchanges. I thought about maybe selling it maybe but I wouldn't get close to what I paid for it I'm sure.

You could try selling it, but you might not get back what you paid for it. Are there any alterations that can be done to turn it into a dress you love? That may be cheaper than buying a new dress.

No you probably won't. What about any alterations? Or even the perfect veil/jewelry can make a dress look completely different.

Maybe. This is the dress (but ivory, not pink, and tried plain white but I was not a fan of any of them). I'm thinking of taking the straps off (which I've been assured can be done) and turning it into strapless, which I prefer. I got a belt that I really liked that I'm hoping will assist. Our colors are mostly neutral/metal tones like black, silver and gold with small pops of red and purple here and there, so I'm thinking maybe it could potentially be a good idea to do some small silk flowers on the bottom of the different layers of the dress or something.

That is a beautiful dress!! I love the different layers. I think it would be just as beautiful as a strapless dress. You could also add a red or purple (or other color that matches your colors) ribbon to go under the belt around the waist to give it an extra pop of color. The silk flowers are a unique idea as well! What are your concerns about the dress other than the straps?

I really liked the v-cut when I first tried it on, but now I'm kind of iffy on it but there are things that could be done.

Also Lisa, the belt I was hoping would really help bring back how much I liked it when I first tried it on is basically what you're describing but black ribbon underneath. I'm glad my ideas don't seem that silly, I was worried they would.

    Thanks guys for your input!

I think your ideas sound great! I think the black ribbon under the belt will look amazing - especially if the belt has any embellishments, they will really stand out against the black! For the V cut, assuming the dress is altered correctly, it should stay in place. But I totally understand your fear, I'm not brave enough to wear strapless lol. But a panel could definitely be easily added to address your concerns, either sheer or solid. The nice thing about those alterations is that they shouldn't be too expensive! Maybe try on the dress again and hold up the ribbon and belt to it and see how you feel about it. If you still have concerns after that, and you don't think alterations could fix it, you could always look at used dresses online, since they're usually way cheaper than new ones. But I do think your current dress is a nice one, and hopefully the alterations will help you love it!

I had dress envy - do you like your dress but when you look at other gowns you like those too? but that even if that happens, you still like your dress anyway?

because i think that dress envy is different from dress regret. i think dress regret is you look at your dress and really don't want it. i looked at mine and loved it but i also admittedly loved other gowns too.

That could honestly be what it is. I love dresses, but I don't get the opportunity to dress up very much and honestly, my wedding will be the first time that I have in at least 4-5 years and maybe I just want to wear them all.

I just freaking love wedding dresses and would wear one every day if I could, which is why I have three. I think that dress is gorgeous, and with your modifications will be just what you wanted.

I wasn’t in love with my dress. I got it because I didn’t think I’d find something else and I’d want that one but it would be gone when i went back to get it (it was off the rack).
My wedding turned out fine. I looked beautiful, I was comfortable, and everyone complimented how nice I looked/the dress was.
So my suggestion is just stopping looking and second guessing your self. Let the what if’s go. You will be beautiful on your wedding day. And, it’s a lovely dress.

Aww you sound just like me. I got a dress because I was suppose to come back from my NY trip with a dress. I really liked it a lot but I never saw it in the color I ordered. When I got it I still liked it but know something was missing. I tried adding a belt, maybe a flower strap....it wasn’t cutting it. After postponing bc of COVID. I decided to sell my dress. Then for something for my bridesmaids I went to David’s Bridal. I saw this dress in the window. I couldn’t stop looking at it. Lady asked if i wanted to try it on......BAM the dress. I just got it today and I know I made the right choice. Like the others said the dress is beautiful and you will probably be beautiful in it. But you have to feel beautiful.....
