Having older flower girl and ring bearer?

Bethany, on June 7, 2021 at 12:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18
I want to have a flower girl and ring bearer but I do not have any smaller children in my family or friend circles. I do however have two cousins both age 10 who could potentially fill the those roles. Is it weird to have 10 year olds as the ring bearer and flower girl? (Not sure if it matters but it's going to be a black tie evening wedding)

I don't think it's wrong if you want them to be part of your wedding.

It's fine to have 10-year-olds in your wedding party. But I think at that age, they should be allowed to decide if they want to do it. So, go ahead and ask them and see what they say.

No I was a flower girl twice as a child, ages 8 and 10 each time.

I don't think its weird but definitely think they should be into it and excited about it. I could see a 10 year old either being like psyched or thinking, "I'm not a baby anymore, that's for little kids." As long as they and their parents like the idea, do it!

I was a flower girl at about age 9 in my aunt and uncle's wedding. Perfectly fine to have older children involved. I have great memories from the ceremony and the reception.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm actually having my 18 year old cousin and my 20 years old brother as my flower men.

I think that sounds lovely. I'd make sure they're comfortable with/have some say in the dress, so they don't feel like they're being babied, but otherwise I think it's a really nice way to include them!

    I was my sister's flower girl when I was 8 or 9. I had a blast.

I see no problem with that. 10 is still pretty young.

I already responded but I would have never (and yes I mean never) had a flower girl/ring bearer under the age of five and even that would have been a stretch. Yeah, no I don't want a two year old crying, wandering around, turning and waving at his/her parents. I don't understand the need for kids that young to be involved, lol!!

The only time age matters is if it matters TO THE KID. I had times in my childhood where I would’ve loved to have any role in a wedding, and times where I desperately wanted others to think of me as grown up and would’ve been embarrassed if I got the kid roll at the wedding just because I was the youngest of the cousins. So, 10 isn’t too old, unless the 10 year old feels like they’re too old.

Another way to circumvent that is to come up with more grown up titles for them (ex “flower lady”) so there’s some recognition they’re appreciated as a little older

Our ring bearer will be 11 at the time of our wedding and flower girls will be 9, 7 and 5
