Having Mono and my wedding is less than 3 months away

Jeanette, on May 4, 2017 at 2:25 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I'm not looking for a pity party, I'm looking for advice. I've had acute mono for 4 weeks now and I'm over feeling like shit. Did I mention I'm getting married in less than 3 months? I felt OK Monday and Tuesday this week so I decided to workout yesterday for 30 mins. I woke up this morning not feeling so great and now I'm in bed feeling warm and not well. Has anyone had mono before and when does it go away? I really need to workout and my goal weight is to lose 15 more pounds before the big day. Any advice would help me. Thank you!

I had mono but didn't know it for months. See your doctor. They thought my lethargy was caused by strong seizure meds and then found out I had mono antibodies in my blood. Had they known it was mono it probably wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. I know you want to lose weight but your body needs rest, fluids and nutrients to fight this. If you push yourself you will prolong it. Take it as easy as possible and see your doctor and see of there is anything that can be done to help your body fight it. I had it from October till about sometime before the blood work in April. Again I had no medical intervention to help fight it cause they thought it was caused by other things. I have known people who get over it quickly and some take a bit longer. But on the plus side once you have it once you shouldn't be able to get it again.

Np. The more you rest the easier of a time your body will have fighting it. Hope you get better with plenty of time to spare before your big day.

Don't work out until you're clear of mono. Working out while sick will just make you sicker. I agree with PPs about going to the doctor about trying to get meds or something to help you get healthier sooner. In the mean time, take it easy and feel better

I had mono a long time ago when I was 15. I did not know it at first. I honestly didn't know it until about a month into it when my throat was almost completely swollen shut. I went to the hospital and they gave me steroids. It took about another month after that until I was completely back to normal. During that time I was not allowed to do any strenuous activities because it can rupture your appendix. I would talk to your doctor before resuming any sort of exercise.

I had mono my freshman year of college... I know you want to lose weight for your wedding, but you need to take care of yourself and rest. Go see your PCP.

You definitely need to call your doctor before thinking about exercising with mono. Over-exerting yourself can land you in the hospital with serious complications. Your body has to work really hard to fight off the virus, so you need proper rest and nutrition more than you need to lose weight!

Also, health concerns aside (which are obviously the most important), 15 lbs is a lot and could mean serious alterations work. Does your seamstress know you are trying to lose that much this close to your date? Depending on where you lose it, that could be a full dress size or two down (which could mean taking your entire bodice apart to resize the pieces!)

Your health is more important than losing some weight. Your FH would rather have you, as you are now, in a gorgeous wedding dress on your wedding day than in a hospital bed because you pushed yourself too hard while being sick and ruptured your spleen.

Mono is a hell of an illness and you need to be in touch with your doctor about your symptoms and issues. There's no definitive timeline for when you recover - it varies person to person. My brother's girlfriend had it for 2 1/2 months; my friend in high school was able to recover after about 4 weeks. You need to rest as much as possible, eat a balanced diet, and focus on recovering, not losing weight.

I had mono for almost 3 months. It's awful and I'm so sorry you have it but the best thing is to listen to your body and rest ALOT.

First of all, diet is more important than exercise in losing weight.

Second of all, why would you work out without talking to your doctor? Mono is serious.

I had mono in high school, I got over the sickness part in about 2-4 weeks, but my energy never returned for over a year. That being said, I made it to Junior Prom (but after all the preparations of the day I only had the energy to dance to one song). Talk to your doctor, and rest your body.

I've had mono twice (so much for "you can only get it once"). Both times were while I was in college. I had to withdraw for a semester the first time and a because I had switched to a college that was on quarters rather than semesters, only a quarter the 2nd time.

DO NOT push yourself here. You need to rest and follow all of your doctor's orders. If you do too much you will likely set yourself further back. I know you want to get up and be active, but it will make this last longer.

I had mono so bad two years ago I landed in the hospital and it made my liver enzymes go up so my labs reported Hep B too (luckily it was just my labs so I actually didn't have it). But I literally sat on the couch/bed all day for a month before I started to feel okay. Drink lots of fluid and don't workout that will just delay you getting better. My doctor always told me to let it run it's course it can last for as short as a month to as long as 18 months. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT overexert yourself, get lots and lots and lots of rest. Since I didn't really move or do anything for a solid month and a half I recovered so fast my doctor was shocked. The point is to let your body recover. Sleep a lot! get fruit juice and water. Good Luck! Hope you get better soon, mono seriously bites!

I did my freshman year of college, but I was good in a couple of weeks.

You do need to sit down somewhere and not worry about losing weight. You can't have the wedding you planned if you're in the hospital because you had to have surgery to deal with a ruptured spleen.

Generally speaking I have no issue with working out with general illness- raising your core body temperature helps kill bugs.

BUT- in the case of mono- you're spleen is impacted- and can be enlarged- and guess what- it can rupture.

So yeah- don't workout when you have mono- unless you're like- walking to your car.

If you haven't seen a doctor- please CALL THEM. There is nothing you can do for mono as it's a virus- but they will tell you what you can/should be doing.

You should be fine- but avoid contaminating people and vigorous sports.

I had mono a few years ago. I only had a sore throat for a few days, but the fatigue and joint pain knocked me down hard for a solid 2 months, and then it took several more for me to finally start feeling 100% again. The important thing is to listen to your body and rest, because that's what's going to speed up your recovery.

So I've for sure seen my doctor 2 weeks ago and that's how I know I have Mono. I have a follow up appt with him tomorrow to get an ultrasound of my spleen. Thanks for the advice everyone but I think ya'll are right. I can't workout until I'm better and my health is more important than anything. I didn't realize how serious mono is. Yikes...
