Having a shaman as officiant?

Haley, on February 2, 2015 at 10:39 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Alrighty, so my FH and I aren't very traditional. We're both young hippies that don't want the same old church wedding as our parents. We'd like to be married by a spiritual Shaman, but neither of us really knows where to start with finding or connecting with someone like that. We aren't Native American, so I don't think native tribes or reservations will help much. Any advice?

You won't get any help from native Americans, try a Druid group they may be more helpful!

If you just want to be different how about having a friend officiate? Then have a sand ceremony or something different that way x

Haley, I googled "shaman" and your city and town. Right off the bat, I came up with two places you might call to make some inquiries.

There are several more in your area. I'm not seeing anything about officiating at weddings, but they do all kinds of different ceremonies. It's worth giving them a call. At least you'll be talking to someone in the right community and they may be able to assist you in finding what you're looking for.

If you're looking for an officiant that does more non-traditional things, you can try a Unitarian Church and see if they have a CUUPs (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) program. You want to make sure that whomever you get to do the ceremony that is is in fact legal in your state.

Is there a reason you wouldn't hire a non-church officiant to perform your ceremony...? I'm not in your area or trying to sell anything! But you might be surprised by the depth (and width) we non-church officiants can, and do, perform. I have performed an Eastern European Crown Ceremony, an authentic Celtic ceremony, and hundreds of simply 'romantic' ceremonies -- where we leave Deity at the door, and make the ceremony all about love and romance. All things are possible!
