Having 1 extra at a tables

Jen, on August 6, 2019 at 10:11 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17

I have 123 attending guests, my tables are designed and big enough to seat 10. Would you try to make some 3 tables have 1 extra (especially the tables with kids) assuming all tables are perfectly filled? I worry because 13 tables means almost 500$ extra in linens, chargers, centerpieces, and decor?

I personally think that even 10 to a table is a stretch, I definitely wouldn't seat 11 people at one table. I would reduce a few tables to 8ish people and just have an additional table to fit the leftovers.

I definitely wouldn't squeeze more people than can comfortably fit into a table.

A 10 person table is usually an 8-10 person table where 10 is pretty much elbow to elbow. Unless it's a larger table that can seat 12, and then it's a 10-12 person table. We had tables for 8-10, and while I had a few tables of 10, they were mostly 8 or 9 people (a few with 7 even). You also have to factor in that people will not divide evenly into groups of 8-10 people. I had 115 guests and 14 tables because that's how it all played out once I arranged people into groups of who they know/who they may be interested in knowing.

I totally get the extra cost, but I think your guests being comfortable during dinner is important and squeezing an 11th person into three tables is probably going to make 33 people uncomfortable. Even small kids need a place to sit, and no matter how small they are the chairs are a standard size and take up a set amount of space.

Definitely spring for the extra tables. Find somewhere else to cut if you must, but your guests’ basic comfort shouldn’t an area to skimp on. I get it - it all adds up for sure, but Caytlyn and Hannah are right re: 10 at a table.

What size are the tables? I've typically seen 8-9 for normal round tables, 10 seems like a lot.

I’d most likely suggest getting the extra table and giving all your guests more space.
Are the tables 60” or 72”? — that’ll make a big difference. A 60” could seat 10 but there truly wouldn’t likely be enough physical space to add an 11th chair— even if its children, the chairs still take up the same minimum amount of space, and need to be able to be pushed in.

I'd get an extra table and just spread people out. You can have some tables just 8-10 people rather than all fitting 10.

I have a similar situation and decided to squeeze one tiny human at the age of 3 onto a full table. You pointed out you will have a kids table, depending on their ages having one extra seat shouldn't be an issue.

I would just plan for the extra table.. Plus then you have a little more space for the what if someone brings an unexpected plus one, or someone calls you a few days before to change their mind, etc. And as PP said, sometimes it's hard to make the seating chart exactly with 10 people, if you have 1 more table then you have a little wiggle room with the seating chart

I think if you think it’s a good idea to squeeze then do it. Every wedding I’ve been to it seems like the seating chart is forgotten about halfway through dinner. No one will remember if they had to sit closer to their child than they normally would for an hour or so.

They are 72" tables which are recommend for 10-12, so I think I will be fine.

I would put 10 people only at a table for 12. We went to a wedding and were sat 10 to a table and it was so uncomfortable. You couldn’t move without hitting the person next to you. I would do 8-9 at a 10 person table. May be a little more in cost, but your guests will appreciate it

You are totally fine with 11 at a 72" round.
