Have the dress, When do i take it for alterations?

Steph, on January 19, 2020 at 9:55 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 6
So I bought my dress from David’s Bridal about 2.5 months ago, and in 2 weeks, it came in! So now my dress is sitting in the garment bag in my closet and I’m wondering when I should make My first alteration appointment? Wedding is in October and I’ve read all the forums but it seems that a lot of people didn’t get their dress for like 5-6 months which obviously isn’t the case for me.

So when do I make contact with the seamstress for the first time?

I had my dress altered right away. I knew I wanted cap sleeves, bra inserts, and a bustle, which wouldn’t be affected by time. And I had it hemmed bc I’m certainly done growing. If you’re having anything let out or taken in I would wait til closer to your wedding.

I say it depends. For me, I am steadily losing weight thanks to a low carb diet, so I decided to wait as long as possible before going to get fitted. I believe the general rule is you want 2-3 fittings, so 2 to 3 months before you can take it in to start.

I got married in October and I had my first alterations appointment in August. I had a total of 3 fittings, including my final 2 week fitting right before the wedding to make sure no last minute touch ups were needed.

Daughter's wedding was in January, and I think her first alterations appointment was in late October. She ended up having 3-4 appointments, but wanted to be certain it was completely done by the middle of December because her bridal salon (who also did the alterations) closes for a full week between Christmas and New Year's and she wanted to be sure she had "custody" of her dress before they closed. (Her dress arrived from the manufacturer in late January a year before the wedding.... We stored it at our house until she took it back for alterations in October.)

I started alterations 3 months out. I had one appointment 3 months out, another 1 month out, and another 1 week out.
