Hats?!

Aylenrose, on April 23, 2017 at 1:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

My FH went up north to see his dad for his birthday he comes back and tells me that he's letting his two brothers wear hats. One of his brothers who is 22 is really insecure about his hair he's doesn't have much so sure he can wear a hat. He tells me one brother is wearing a cowboy hat and the other is wearing a top hat. Our wedding is elegant geek with hints of our love of video games and I feel like that's going to look weird I know they can wear whatever they want and my FH already told them yes that he thinks that it will make the wedding fun? I don't know I guess I needed to vent a bit because I am not feeling it I feel like it just doesn't go. I guess the top hat kind of does but it's the longer one like the monopoly guy hopefully he doesn't have the monocle to lol.

A groomsman also told me FH that he wants a hat since he's bald and we agreed to it. No hats in the church though. But everyone has to get the same hat to match or it will look really weird in pictures.

I've commented twice on this and it refuses to show... hhhmmmm. Maybe I need to "hang up my hat".

If you are having an elegant wedding I would recommend a fedora. Top hats sometimes look too costumey.

Lol! @future381swife I wonder why it didn't let it show. I wanted it to be elegant but with our little hints of gamer added to it. Fedora would have been better but FH already let his brother buy the top hat and he spent 80$ on it. His other brother said he's using his old black cowboy hat and FH gave it the ok I guess to them if its black its nice enough? Lol I'm just like great now the pictures are going to look weird and them standing up there are going to stick out.

I personally would be okay with the hats as long as they were the same. Honestly, I would just have all men in the bridal party wear one, it seems so romantically vintage to have top hats.

Are you getting married in a church? If so, I would so "no" to the hats.

I'm not feeling it; I think the fedora thing is on the way out and the top hat thing is just plain farty. And a mix will look like a garage sale.

Top hats are formal, not merely elegant.

I think the hat mixture is a bit weird - a top hat next to a cowboy hat? i'm not feeling it, either.

Video game hints....would a Link hat or the hats from Mario Bros. be too 'in your face' to count as a 'hint' of video game? There's always the Master Chief helmet from Halo, too.

I'm not feeling the hat idea either it may look cheap when it's all put together and for an elegant wedding I just can't see it

This is the perfect geek edition. Team Fortress 2 is all about having the best hat.

Hats would be a no. If his brother is insecure, he can look into Rogaine or a new haircut or something else. Not your problem!

Just no. Does his brother wear a hat all the time? There were a series of legal firm commercials here in the NY area where one of the attorneys wore a cowboy hat. He looked ridiculous and it was all you would focus on. If my FH made such an agreement, I would tell him to blame the change on me. As in, "I'm sorry, but FW does not want any hats in the photos. You can wear it at the reception when photos are done."

Maybe find a hat that fits your video game hinted theme. Try to make it formal (ie taking a Mario hat style and making it into one of your colors). It'll look a little odd...but it might work. Perhaps subtle lacefront wig for the insecure if hats don't work?

I agree with Olivia. It's rude to wear hats at the dinner table so definitely no hats at the wedding. Also my FH is bald af so if anyone else thinks they are getting away with trying to disguise their baldness on his day to shine (literally glisten in the September sun as we exchange our vows) they are sadly mistaken

Also stemming from a comment above, please do not let anyone you love wear a fedora, anywhere, ever

It's your FH's responsibility to tell them no since he didn't consult you to begin with

It's going to distract and take away from you and look like a gimmick or something

    This would really bother me.

    1) Your FH shouldn't have made a decision without consulting you.

    2) Bald and balding men can be sexy. I personally think hats are out of place at fancy events, unless explicitly part of the dress code.

    3) A cowboy hat and top hat are going to look ridiculous side by side and not at all cohesive. If hats are a must, there are more tasteful options.

In this case, I would either put my foot down about hats entirely (no hats!) or compromise with having the guys wear a hat of your choosing that goes with the groomsmen attire.
