Hashtags, Yay or Nay?

Alexis, on January 9, 2019 at 11:51 AM Posted in Planning 1 24

Hey Guys,

So I have seen a lot of stuff about wedding hashtags, and at first I wan't even curious but I guess now I am starting to wonder about them. Neither my fiance nor I are big on social media, what exactly is the purpose of creating a hashtag? Is it just so guests can post pics from the wedding and use your hashtag? Is it something I should bother with? On the one hand it doesn't totally seem like something we'd even be worried about, but on the other hand his last name is Starr and I could see there being some really cute and fun possibilities for hashtags. What do you guys think, and can someone fill me in on the whole purpose behind this idea?

I personally have no social media. Just because I don’t, doesn’t mean others are in the same boat. My last name will be White & ours is #ItsANiceDayForAWhiteWedding

Oh that's so cute! So then is the purpose just for photo tagging at the reception?

I like it because when people (hopefully) use it I can search the tag and see a bunch of pictures in the same place, from my guests' point of view. I can search it in a few years when I want to reminisce a bit. Also my fh and I went to his cousin's wedding and searched their tag afterwards and found an awesome video of him dancing lol. Its definitely not necessary, but it's a relatively easy thing to do, if you want to.

Hi Alexis. Neither Rick nor I have social media. We are not doing hashtags. I know that is not helpful as to what they are good for 🙁 Sorry.

I've used it also when I posted engagement pictures, our guests used it at our engagement party, and we're planning on using it at my bridal shower/bachelor/bachelorette, so we can look at all wedding related things at the same time.

The purpose of a hashtag is for guests to post their photos from your wedding day (and/or events leading up to it) and then you can see them all by clicking on the hashtag. The ideal hashtag would be a unique one that nobody has ever used before that way, only photos from your wedding (and events leading up to it) would be tagged with that hashtag. Even if you don't use social media much, I would still think it nice to go on and be able to see all the photos your guests took from your wedding! I have a hashtag idea for you

    #StarrCrossedLovers

I have thought about this every time I see one of the hashtag posts.

Both of us are on social media and used to work in social media. It's unnecessary. We typically call ourselves Maktrillo (a fusion between my and his last names, our wedding site was named that, but we didn't have an official hashtag). Likely you follow all your guests, they'll tag you if you're in the wedding, but I feel like they aren't very current anymore.

There's a lot of social pressure but in the end people will tag you or send you the photos, especially if you ask.

After our wedding we sent out a link for everybody to submit to a shared Google Photos folder and got every photo or video that people captured, including snapchats.

    Hey Alexis!

As other commenters have mentioned, I think a lot of couples use hashtags so when their guests post photos using their personalized hashtag, they're able to search for that hashtag and see all the photos that their guests posted at their wedding! It's basically just a way to compile photos taken by guests from your wedding so you can see them! And it can be fun to display a cute hashtag at a welcome table or on your wedding website!

If you didn't want to do a hashtag but wanted a way to still compile photos, I know there are other services you can use such as Tacboard (there is a fee associated with some of them though, including Tacboard)!

Oh I do love the idea of getting an array of pictures from all the different events along the way, very cute!

I have twitter and instagram and I love social media and zero desire to do a hashtag. In my opinion it’s part of the whole wedding thing that occurs now that social media even exists... engagement photos, websites for weddings, hashtags.. what else. Whatever... not my thing. Do you if it’s yours... I’m just not into it.

I don't think they are necessary, we didn't do one. One, we are friends with everyone posting about our wedding so we are just tagged in it. Two, if we aren't friends with someone and they hashtag it, the profile is most likely private so we won't see it anyway.

You can use your hashtag for any & everything wedding related. That way you can search for everything under one name.

I don't think they're necessary, but helpful for locating pictures of your wedding that you might not be tagged in? Or so you can see them all in one place from multiple people? I originally wasn't going to do one, but my FH's last name is Pardue, and after we got engaged, everyone from his work called him "I Do Pardue" for like a week, so now I feel obligated to use #IDoPardue because it's way too cute not to!

We didn't. Both of use hashtags only when being sarcastic. We saw easily saw the pictures others posted of us.

I like it bc if your friends post photos they took at your wedding you can find them and see them easily. But you don’t have to have one.

Search #starrcrossedlovers on IG first. It could be used a lot already?
