Has anyone have to put money down to get a dress that wasn't at the store?

Yes, but the store owner took one deposit from me to order my two favorite dresses. She ordered them according to my measurements. When they arrive, I will try them on and choose the one I want. The deposit will go towards that dress, and the second dress will be put on the wrack to be sold in her store. If I don’t like either dress, I can put the deposit towards a different dress and she will sell the two she ordered.
Call the store and ask what their plan is if you don’t like the dress.

I'm a plus sized lady. The first store I went to required a $50 deposit to bring in 5 dresses from a specific company to try on, but they would take the $50 off the dress I chose to buy.

I didn't do it, but i wasnt too worried about it. I just wanted to try other options first.

This didn't happen to me but I have heard of it happening. Most of the time the down payment is so they can cover the cost of getting the dress to their store - since it's not free for them to get any dress they choose, you know But the down payment ended up going towards whatever dress you chose in their store, so it really isn't a huge deal. I would say to go ahead and go for it as long as you're confident you would like to choose your dress from that store Or as long as the down payment is reasonable, I don't think it's a bad idea.
