Has anyone had an appraisal from Kays

MrsGC, on September 12, 2013 at 2:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

The center stone of my ring came from FH's mom. So when he purchased the ring it was the band and then he had it set. It never came with an appraisal and I need to get one for insurance purposes. Has anyone had an appraisal from Kay's (or a similar type of store)and if so what can you tell me about it?

edited for typo!

My ring is from Kay's and I was going to get an appraisal from them, but they said they would have to send it out because they don't do it in store. They told me it could take up to 10 days to get it back. I ended up going to a local jeweler and he did it in 15 minutes. If you know a local jeweler I would go there. Then you won't have to send it out and it will be done faster.

Thanks Courtney. Do you remember if there was a big fee for the appraisal?

Please, please go see a local and independent jeweler. You will get a MUCH better appraisal that is more accurate. I hope this helps!

Don't use a jewelry chain. Use an independent appraiser.

I think it was about $40-$50, I don't remember exactly it was over a year ago!

I had one at Jared's. It took about an hour - cost me around $100 + tax.

The appraiser was an independent who came to the store 1 time a quarter and did appraisals for anyone - not just jewelery bought at Jareds.

Gave me a diagram of my ring, rating (clarity & color)

    Totally worth it.

I did the same thing with my ring - my stone is an hierloom and my band was bought at Jareds.

    Definitely recommend it

Wish i did a local jeweler! Had it done at a big box store though an appraisal event because I didn't want to send it out. It took about an hour and cost nearly $150. The appraisal seemed accurate though and I got all the necessary paperwork for the insurance company.

I definitely think a local place may have been the better idea. I went local when I needed some securing done for the center stone.

We used a local family jeweler that charged $50. We plan on getting the wedding bands from them, too.

My mother went to Kays and they valued her ring at 12k but she felt it was wrong, so she took it to an independent appraiser and they valued it at 28k plus they provided a diamond certificate
